Default Starting Problems...

Okay so I have been having problems lately with my starter. It will free-spin and not catch the flywheel, so you can hear it whining as it spins but it doesn't turn the motor at all. I picked up a new starter and put it in assuming that would just take care of the problem but it's continuing to do this which makes me quite unhappy. So i've come to the conclusion that either there's a problem with the flywheel or there's a wiring problem with the solenoid or something.. When I changed the starter I looked at the flywheel and didn't see any teeth missing, but only in the one part i saw.. I didn't spin it to check the entire thing. But I gave the crank bolt a couple spins now to move the flywheel and see if it'll affect the starting but it doesn't seem to make any difference, it still doesn't catch the flywheel.

Anybody have any opinions on what it could be? Am I missing something here? Any help would be seriously appreciated because i'm getting a little tired of pushing this bitch up the street to start it lol.

Alex,
You need to clean your battery cables and you might have a bad battery. Get a load test FREE from Autozone. I think you are missing some amps. Note the footnote for the replacement starter.

Product Note: IMPORTANT!! Voltage supplied to the starter has to be to factory specs for this starter to perform properly. If voltage is too low, the starter will not spin fast enough to fully engage the flywheel. Prior to installing this starter, visually inspect battery, battery cables, and teeth on the ring gear and repair as necessary, then perform a load test to determine the condition of the battery.

Thanks for the help pops. Ill check the battery tomorrow when I can get my hands on a tester. I'm fairly positive the battery is good, it's not very old but it never hurts to check. When it does decide to turn over it really has no trouble turnin the motor. It's only the matter of if it catches the flywheel or not.

Still could be a bad connection on the battery somewhere hence the reason it comes and goes. if its all the time and consistently getting worse then id check the starter.

It's not fixed still but it turned out to be the flywheel... The flywheel is broken, so the starter is turning the teeth which are no longer attached to the center of the flywheel lol that's why it just makes the noise like it's freespinning but doesn't turn the motor...
