That's what I would do. just jump a wire from your start up signal wire from your ignition straight to your starter....

You never said Sometimes it starts fine....Check for 12volts at the single wire to ground with ignition on Crank. If you do have 12volts then clutch safety switch is good and you need to replace the starter as the solenoid on the starter is going and the reason it starts with the wire is you are putting direct volts/amps from battery to your weak solenoid.
