A hone is simply to break the glaze on the walls to seat new rings. If there was any real problem with the engine then I agree it should be overbored and honed by a machine shop. If you just want to refresh the engine there is nothing wrong with honing yourself if the walls are straight. I used to refresh the engines from our BMW road race car each season. I measured the bore taper with my dial bore gauge and then ordered new rings and honed them myself. Worked perfect every time.

says it all. Ive honed before with great results, but you HAVE to know that the block dimentions are perfect, or you're walking into a wall.

Just what I have always been told by people smarter than myself, lol. I believe it has to do with embedding particles in wall surface but I'm really not sure.
