I know i would say rings get my vote... i myself like this ringcompressor its easy and holds tight

see rang that one looks heavy duty. this guy would put the compressor around the piston, lay it on block hit the compressor with wood to even it out on the block then smack the piston in. the ring would pop out right before the block and hit the top of the cylinder and stay stuck.

If all that u say is true then yes your ring r either chipped or out alignment,if not more damage..I myself don't tap them in I give them one nice push reason being just like u said.if u think about it if you tap them ever hit wil make the motor bounce and like u said the ring will not make it in...

i wouldnt lie about it and by tapping it it i mean like he would take the end of a rubber hamer and hit it one good time to push it in and it would always stop before entering the block as if the oil ring poped out between the compressor and the block.

^then i would go with a ring problem,if it smokes from start up and does not stop then its your rings...was the engine just honed or is it bigger pistons to?
