My car did the exact same thing, It would jump all over the place, from10mph to 120 to 60, then 0, sometimes it wouldn't work at all for a long time, I changed the VSS and it fixed the problem, Look on your tranny just behind your starter, there should be a 2/3wire plug back there that hooks onto a sensor that has 1-2 10mm bolts holding it down, some of the sensors come aparts in 2 peices( bottom peice is the mech part. top peice is the elec part) You can pick one up for about $40 on Ebay, my car is a 99 SI and I am using a sensor for a 94 accord. Im like 80% sure that your car has a VSS, look and see, look it up on ebay, search for VSS with your car modle. good luck..

i searched around on shop key and there are no vss's on my rs, only the legend, its a mechanical cable, the first thing im going to do is what therainfoest said is check the continuity on the speedometer pulsar and see if its bad. if so then no prob if not, then i will find a jack somewheres and start looking where it goes to the tranny. ill keep you updated.

If you can pull the cable up, out of the housing from
behind the speedo, it's the cable.

As to getting the dash loose, first; to get there,
pop off the contriol knobs,
and pop out the 3 square switches. There's a screw holding
something down, somewhere on the right side._Bob

2. the speed pulser you check that by taking out the gauge cluster and sticking a pencil in the back of the speedometer cable connecter socket and then turn the pencil while checking resistance on the two terminals below it (they look like screws) there will be resistance at 4 points while turning the pencil 360 degrees. if there is no resistance you will need a cluster.

expensive and creative route: convert to a vss and get another cluster.
cheap way.. get a hold of a new cable
