One option would be to sell your car and buy an older Honda and start from there, but If u really like your car, do what Skittle told you to do and swap that d17 out for a k20a. Its the motor out of the new Si or Rsx type-S. you will be happy with that.

if your new to the game, you should start by learning. Learn more about your car, become familiar with all of your options, search all the related boards like here, hondatech or what have you. Once you have a better grasp on what can be done, decide what your goal is with the car. You told me you wanted it to be fast, which is a pretty relative term. Since you've never modified a car before, your going to realize that most of the parts out there won't make much difference when starting from ~125HP. You may want to consider saving your penny's until you can afford something that actually will be fast, like a K-series engine swap as apposed to dumping money into I/H/E etc.. and realizing your not getting very far after the fact.
You know where to find me if you have questions, and if I don't have the answer, I can point you to people that DO know the answer. Good luck, & have fun w/ it.

the b16 swap in that car would be alot of hassle, I had the same exact model in 2001 and went looking for swaps, at the time there were none but now there are more options. the b16 has shifter "rods" wher the d17 ( your car) has cables. I don't know how much fabrication would have to go into changing to rods but maybe someone else can. If it were me I'd run the k20 swap, or if you can get your hands on it the type r in the k series. $$$$$$$ lotsa cash though for that one.
I eventually sold my 01 civic so that I could get into an older car that would accomidate the b16 as well as having a huge aftermarket following ( back in 2002 there wasn't shit) I have seen the greddy turbo kit for the d17 and it's not too bad.
What kind of horsepower are you looking for??? track car or street?? your goals will dictate the most sensible route to take on the performance upgrades.
if your looking for a little extra pep, but want a daily driven, reliable car, then go for a supercharger. if you want alot of pep ( around 200hp), and still daily driven, then the jackson racing supercharger with the 11psi kit is the way to go ( if they make it for the d17). if its for the track then, swap the motor and get ready for a ton of cash, rebuild, turbo, and maintenance.

which is why, id suggest to save your 500/mo until youve got about 4k (to cover motor, mounts, and various expenses), and get an H22a (cable shifter).
also, depending on the cutout, id be curious to see if a rod shift assy would swap directly into a 01+ civic.

then a stock motor with a jackson racing super charger would be the way I'd go. I would use a motor that has good hp numbers stock, so that you have a good base to start with. the h22a as mentioned above may be a more compatible swap (less fabrication) than the b series motors, and it has awsome hp to start with ( hell after putting it in you may not want to add more) figure 220hp from a stock h22. I don't have alot of experience with the h series but I have been told they are extreemly reluctant to cooperate with forced induction.
the k-series also has the multiplexed system, basically more than one signal for the ecu on just one wire, so it is picky when it comes to tuning; however hondata ( and I am sure uberdata) have systems for the k-series so that should eliminate those problems.
my favorite is still the b-series, b16, b18 ( not a huge fan of the b20, to see if the shifter issue is a problem you'd have to look at the rod shifter ( on a stock honda) and then look at the tunnel in your car where the exhaust pipe runs. If I remember right when I put on my cat back the tunnel would be in almost the perfect spot, the only question would be bolting on the rod supports and then the hole needed for the shifter. also check hasport for motor mounts for the swap ( regardless of what engine you decide on).
