You can't do much unless you have the proper tools avail, such as a leak down test etc.
Only thing I can think of without a lot of tools is turning the crank with a 19mm & possibly remove the valve cover to inspect the valvetrain.
Good Luck.

Even if someone cant go, i just need to know a couple things so i can try them myself. Is there a way to get the motor to run without it being in a car?

Anyways, it's none of my business what the cost is... I'm just guessing, and I'd say, if u are spending that much on something THAT old of a motor (9 yrs) with "X' amount of miles, I would HONESTLY suggest building your own Motor...
It's MORE cost effective and you know what you are getting: ie, NEW bearings, thrust washers, and New rings, etc...
mtber is Right: "not many people actually know their shit on this forum", but some of us are telling you our suggestions from Experience...
I live in Palm Harbor and would be more than happy to go with you, but unfotunately, I have to work Monday, I am off on Tuesday...
Again, I would HIGHLY recommend you spending the money on building a project for at LEAST two reasons:
1) You know what is going into the motor, and the quality/reliability of the parts...
2) Self-sense of Pride knowing you did it yourself...
If you have any questions, just PM me... or AIM: Shift9ear80
