Default valve cover rice or not

I have seen several valve covers with the end cut off, or made that way. I am refering to the end at the cam gears of coarse. is this a cosmetic preference or is this done for an actual function??

if done for a funtional use is it better to cut it off or buy it pre made that way.

I know it sounds dumb but its been nagging me for a while and I finally remembered to ask while I was on tr.

Isn't it just the plastic shroud that covers the gears and goes all the way down to the bottom of the block. It's not part of the valve cover. They just cut the top piece of that shroud off. I think it's for looks only and if you ask me it is stupid sense it is there to protect the gears/belt from shit, dirt, etc. I wouldn't recommend it.

PS: I may be wrong, it's been a long time since I've studied a Honda motor, but this is what I think.

It's not rice is MOST cases, it's for tunability as John said. If you don't know what it's for then you probably shouldn't do it.

My valve cover is cut strictly for tuning.... if it werent for that i wouldnt have done it.... dont just do it for look but if you buy cam gears and plan on doing some tuning, its not a bad idea..... But like John said, leave as much as you can to prevent anything from getting inside the timing cover...

And the reason its done for tuning is because most shops charge by the hour for dyno time and it would take a lot longer to keep pulling the valve cover off to make the adjustments. I think this could be avoided by just getting a beat up valve cover done for tuning and a nice one to keep on like InTeGrA RaCeR said keep your shit a mystery meaning as stock as possible so no one knows what you have.

For tuning? Why wouldn't you just tune with it off, then when everything runs right put it back on. And showing off your cam gears? That sounds gay. I'm gonna buy a clear valve cover so everyone can see my pretty camshafts. hehe
