Running "Rich" ? could use a lil info
lil rich can be bad here guys !!! lil lean is where the power is ! rich can leve deposits and eventually wash out rings. Depends on the color of smoke.
Black = Fuel
White = Condensation
Blue = oil
and if you have ricer mods and your puffing black smoke its normal its called rice !!! lol your shits not tuned right cause you did some gawd awful huge exhaust and o cat or the car is just old !
If you have oil and fuel mixing you have larger issues than just runnig a lil rich !!!

Sounds like your friend has things slightly confused... Let me lay the ground rules down for you, so you won't be confused any longer.
Black smoke, USUALLY means rich, also means a buildup of carbon inside your combustion chambers / cylinders (Also caused by running rich, OR car not burning all the gas in the chamber.).
White smoke (that does not stay in atmosphere very long) is GENERALLY water vapor, sometimes this will go away by the time the car warms up, IE: Just condensation in the pipes
If it does NOT go away, it is most likely a blown head gasket, in which case time to get a new one.
White-Grey/Grey-Blue Smoke (that Stays in atmosphere for a while)- This is generally bad oil rings when this happens you may have a week or 10 years before they go completly, and you have to replace them... Depending on how bad the smoke is, that's how bad the rings are.
Now, onto your post.
Since you smell oil mixed in with gas, that would prompt me to tell you: Goto a automotive shop, and ask them to perform a "Leak-Down Test". Ask for that by name, this is NOT the same as a compression test, some places don't know this. A leak down test involves putting compressed air inside your cylinders and measuring how much of it leaks out.
I agree that a little puff every now and again from high shifts is nothing to worry about, in fact, it's mostly normal...
The black smoke thing is not normal, I suggest getting new plugs/wires, basic tuneup shit and see if that doesn't help out any. Generally if your mostly stock, you shouldn't be puffing out black smoke. Black smoke means you're not burning all the fuel inside the chamber, and hence everyone telling you you're running rich. Technically you're not running rich, you're running normal and your ignition system isn't keeping up like it should.
Hope that helps.

I just fixed a problem like that yesterday on my integra ls i was getting oil blow buy in my pcv system it was pushing oil into my throttlebody through my hose that goes to my intake pipe from the valve cover and past my pcv valve into my intake manifold.I did in with my pcv system by pulling the hoses off and capping off the intake and the intake manifold and getting two little ten dollar filters and putting them on my valve cover.Car runs a hell of alot better now.This could be the problem you have.Check and see if you have any oil in your intake pipe after the hose.

think i said most of that just in less words ?
ok, new question.
if it is the rings, should i replace pistons and rings? or just rings?
or should i drop 2g's+ and just build the whole damn engine
what i mean is, is it a bad idea to just replace rings or pistons and rings? will it last me a while?

if you got it spend it ! built is nice you gotta rip it apart anyways to change rings
problem is I have no money at the moment, and i can get a few hundred ALOT easier than i can get 2g
wich is why I ask. is it a bad thing if i just replace rings/pistons?
and if rings are bad can i just replace rings? or do i need to replace pistons too?
