Thoughts on 1.8T Golf or GTI....
Ok so heres how it is...i have a 97 Honda Prelude auto and im considering either a 5spd swap or selling/trading for the 1999 and up golf or gti turbo. Im leaning towards the trade or sell because i dont know how much the 5spd swap would cost and how the transition would be.....but if i do get the VW what do you guys think about the performance on them and parts etc....oh and also insurance costs if anyone has one...............
The VW would be pretty sweet IMO. With it being a turbo, there are some pretty easy upgrades for that. I've seen a silver one in Lakeland. Lowered, bigger rims, a blow off valve and it's not riced at all. It looks tight.

I'm not a big VW fan, but there are some nice ones running aroud. I guess, ask yourself what you are wanting to do with the car and then find out which one will be easier/more cost effective to do it with. Then add in other factors like costs involved, how much you like either car, etc......

Pros:
In my opinion the car looks great. The 1.8t is also a very strong engine (i've seen dyno plots of up to 400hp on a stock bottom end). A reprogrammed ECU will run you from $275-500 and that'll give you a gain of anywhere from 35-50hp and 75ft-lbs of torque depending on your engine code. If you're looking to go a little more extreme I suggest taking a look at APR's stage 3 turbo upgrade (http://www.goapr.com/VW/products/stage3_trans.html). It makes roughly 290hp and 296ft-lbs on 93 octane fuel and 338hp and 325ft-lbs with their 100 octane ecu program. If you want more customization I suggest one of ATP's (ww.vwturbo.com) kits.
Cons:
Now onto the cons. The stock suspension sucks. Although it is very comfortable it gives nothing in the handling department. I suggest upgrading the spring and shocks as one of your early mods. Coilpacks have been an issue on 2001+ cars. Mine have gone out twice, thank god for warranties lol. The car is also porkier compared to the older Mk1, 2, and 3 series GTi's.
I don't claim this car to be the best thing since sliced bread but it is a very fun and enjoyable car to own with some potential to make power. If you'd like any more info PM me.
God I feel like a fucking salesman.
