Definitely sounds like a promising platform. It will be interesting to see if the AWD drivetrain will hold up to the power these will end up making.

We aren't talking Civics here.

Power of the Wiki

Production automobiles

The first turbocharged diesel truck was produced by the "Schweizer Maschinenfabrik Saurer" (Swiss Machine Works Saurer) in 1938.

The first production turbocharged automobile engines came from General Motors in 1962.
The Y-body Oldsmobile Cutlass Jetfire was fitted with a Garrett AiResearch turbocharger and the Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder with a TRW turbocharger. Porsche in 1974 at the Paris Auto Show during the height of the oil crisis, presents the 911Turbo – the world’s first production sports car with exhaust turbocharger and pressure regulator. This was made possible by the introduction of a wastegate to relieve excess pressure.

The world's first production turbo diesel automobiles were the Garrett turbocharged Mercedes 300SD and the Peugeot 604, both introduced in 1978. Today, most automotive diesels are turbocharged

So if this is true then that means U.S has been using Turbo chargers in production before the japs ?? Can anyone confirm this ?

Edit: a sequential twin-turbo. Porsche first used this technology in 1985 in the Porsche 959

Sorry Mazda and japan

yeah, but they aren't doing it now, which is kinda the point. Just from memory, here's the current producers of turbocharged engines.

Hyundai - Genesis coupe
Mitsubishi - Lancer RalliArt / Evolution X
BMW - 1/3/535i
GM - solstice/sky (being phased out)
Honda - RDX (suv)
Porsche - u.can't.afford.it.
VW/Audi - various
Subaru - wrx / sti
Nissan - GTR
Toyota - nothing (shocker, i know!)

Probably missing a model or two, but these are the ones that stick out in my mind. Note that only vw/audi/porsche and BMW consistently puts turbos on everything, including 6 cylinders. Also note: only Mits and Subaru are making anything sporty and affordable (under 35k) turbo charged in japan.

Yes, while you're right, there isn't anything new about turbocharging, but it IS something to get excited about when a domestic make puts out a turbo engine in near everything it makes. This means there will be an abundance of cars to play with, and later on down the line, a huge inventory of affordable junkyard swap possibilities. For those of us NOT living in the early 90s, this is something to get excited about.

You should consider reviewing other markets. In the Latin American market, All they run with is I4 with Turbos. Even Dodge has a few Ram models with I6 Turbo as opposed to their Usual Hemi V8 or V8 Turbo Diesel. Nothing new. As far as why the foreign companies haven't brought all those models stateside, I don't know. Must be the Redneck American mentality that it's all about the V8! My only guess is that the price of gasoline/diesel here in the states hasn't driven this change. In Central America, the price of Gasoline has been consistently over $5 USD in the past few years. We have it easy here in the states when it comes to pumping 93 octane.
