I shift at 3k and rarely ever go into boost in my car.
And because of that,I get better mpg than the EPA estimates(23 mpg city vs the EPA 18 mpg)

Depends on the car. 5K is excessive for normal driving in any car but to each their own. Think about it this way, if you're shifting at 5K instead of 3K you are causing 40% more wear as well has a major amount of heat.

That is true as well, but only in extreme cases.. If your in 5th gear at 20mph and put the pedal to the floor it's putting ALOT of load on the motor. If you're shifting at 2k in every gear and giving it a good amount of throttle, it's not as bad. Basically when you hear and feel the engine lugging is when you wanna throw it down a gear or gradually give it throttle instead.
