As a retired Honda mechanic, I hate the H22 with a passion

It has a hydraulic and a auto tensioner for the timing belt - why do you need two friggin tensioners?

Wiring harness going over the motor makes simple jobs on other honda motors a pita

Balance shafts

The sheer fucking size of the engine makes it a bitch to work on

Pistons made of glass

Sleeves with FRM = annoying to put pistons in

Cable shift trans.

Everything that you love about the B and D series motors the H series simply is the opposite of.

well, just free thinking here, did they possibly do a 2nd tensioner because the one that was originally designed had a high failure rating, and they figured in the long run, rather than recalls and doing warranty engine replacements, they'd add a back up tensioner?

as for balance shafts, its a 2.2 with a long stroke that revs to almost 8k from the factory, im sure for guys such as me and you, the idle loping wouldnt be an issue, but it's one of the creature comforts that will appeal better to the masses.

cable shift trans...thats a toss up. i think everything for the 92 model year was cable shifted except the EG's. that may just be a manufacturers call.

its all speculatory though. it isnt a horrible car. its a car probably built right to its limits from the factory, but it was honda's hi-po car of the day, aside from the nsx.

im suprised i got this much input. i was just kind of venting because i have my car for sale in a couple places, and no serious hits, just a buncha flakers, and for some odd reason everyone wants a civic and i was wondering why no one wanted a prelude.

I think they are cool cars, the model with the square headlights would have to be my favorite. They just messed up like stated before with keeping the FWD econobox format. If they would have made it RWD i would buy one in a second. And that really the only negative i have about them.

trade you my rx7 straight up for it.

but probably the biggest reason no one is going for it is its pricey compared to civics and such, and the fuel mileage isnt there...ludes probably get right around 23mpg...so do intagras though, but civics seem to manage high 20's low 30's. and insurance is probably a little cheaper aswell. plus someone always has used parts for sale on here for them, not so much ludes.

i guess, i mean in 2 of the 3 preludes i have ive gotten at least 25+ mpg in each. but honestly, think of an upside, how many ludes do you hear being stolen compared to integras and civics.

lol, not really a big mazda fan. im actually either trading my car for a 95 300ZX or im just gonna go out one day and drive around until i find someone pulling out and im gonna run into them so my car can be totalled out and i get 4 grand and get to keep the car and then throw the motor in a civic just to be like everyone else and say i have a civic, and then ill pocket the 4 grand. or i could take all my fellow TR members who like preludes out to the titty bar and piss the 4 grand away there.

93-96 Preludes had only a standard tensioner, and it never gave any issues with reliability. Essentially the same motor just different emissions

having built these a few times, they have no issues when you remove them. However, I do tend to recommend you keep them. None the less they make timing belt changes a complete and total nightmare. On B series motors, T belt jobs are a few hour operation, not so with the 97+ Ludes

cable shift trans...thats a toss up. i think everything for the 92 model year was cable shifted except the EG's. that may just be a manufacturers call.
the B and D series motors, the ones that most people modify the most, use solid linkage vs cables. The K series uses cables as well, but the shift quality is SO much better in the B, D, and K series its not even close.

its all speculatory though. it isnt a horrible car. its a car probably built right to its limits from the factory, but it was honda's hi-po car of the day, aside from the nsx.
It isn't a horrible car. If left alone and driven daily, it's a nice enough car. I'm just speaking from my experience, which is that of someone who's busted a lot of knuckles on these cars and could never charge enough to work on them. John at LHT feels the same way as I do
