need help picking out a tranny ...
You could look at the Tremec or Richmond 5 speeds or maybe fit a T-56 in there. Your budget will determine your choices on those.

3550 is capable of handling 425 lb.ft. of torque, good for small block Fords with power adders or launching on slicks at high rpm, or
TKO is upgraded to handle 525 lb. ft. of torque. Good for 400+ cid motors, strokers, etc.
Benefits:
Increased gas mileage
32% overdrive 5th gear drops 3000 RPM to 2000 RPM on the road
.83 optional 5th gear drops 3000 RPM to 2500 RPM on the road
The Tremec handles 400-500 ft/lbs
Reduces noise, heat and wear
Great for both street and race applications
Forte's Parts Connection now has the Tremec 5-speed available for most GM applications. Replace your anemic OEM transmission with a tranny that can handle the job - a reliable Tremec 5-speed. Now GM drivers can have what has been available only to Mustang drivers until now. 5th gear overdrive makes your weekend warrior a daily driver, and drops 3000 RPM down to 2000 RPM on the road. Reduce noise, wear and heat. Great for both street and race applications.

a friend of mine was also telling me that i should go with a tremec but I noticed that it says that the TKO is better suited for 400+ cid moters/strokers and mine is a sb 350. I'm sure it's the same for the TKO II's aswell so I'm not really sure if it's really a problem mine being a smaller block or if it would still work fine and that it's not a problem.

And the power ratings are conservative. A TKO will work great and a TKO II if you don't want/need the overdrive.

I just called automotive engineering and i think his name was rich (don't quote me on it) but he said that I would be better off going with an auto because of the power, which i think is total crap, but he advised that i look into richmond if i had my heart set on a manual. Have you guys heard anything good about em' or know if they're pretty decent? If not I'll prolly stick to the TKO or fix up a nice little T-56 ... maybe.

i dont tend to listen to the guys at AE much. the tremec 3550 is like tremecs big boy replacement to the T56 isnt it? and if anything, look into a viper T56, they come stock with 500/500 and the trannies seem to hold it.

Honestly the guys at AE are stuck in the 80's. Also if they do not carry it then its crap. There are tons of TKO equipped cars in the 9's. I make well over 600 rwhp and don't have a problem. Talk to some experts like Fortes or Hanlon and get the real scoop.
