Turbo 2.3 project???
Damn Leonard, looking for those kind of specs is what got me into the 930.
If you really want those kinds of numbers and a great auto-x car I recommend an old 944 turbo.
Some engine and suspension mods and that car would to better than any hacked up fox body ever could for the same amount of bucks, and you could keep the A/C and interior.

So I see you are back on the crack pipe again ! Same price are you kidding me ? Get me a price on a set of coil overs for a Fox body and then a Porsche for example. First off I bet the cost of the 944 stuff is X times the Mustang stuff and the Mustang parts are dime a dozen plus easy t find.

While the 240sx is a viable alternative (thought about one myself) and possibly the 944 turbo, it just boils down to what type of project do you want. Do you want to go to a junkyard for parts or look for your foreign language dictionary so you can call in an order. Not saying either is better, but I myself prefer scrounging for parts rather than throwing money at them.
Plus, the aftermarket for a Fox mustang is probably the strongest of ANY car EVER built. Thats tough to beat.

The project has a LOT of potential as an SM car. There's a lot of people who say a Mustang can't do it. I don't know. Most of the naysayers aren't considering anything other than V8 power. That won't cut it for this project because of weight and balance. 2500 lbs and 350+ hp is a 'lot', but that's roughly what the CP guys run (and they're a bit lighter as well). The key is putting enough tire under the car... who thinks 315's/335's will fit on a FOX? I'm thinking I can have the car simi-competative for the 6k Talking about for the Porsche (plus porsche's are SM2 -- ouch! turbo miata's).
My house should be done in a couple of months, so that's when I'll get started.
Craig, where have you seen old foxes priced for that little? It sure isn't in auto trader.....
Anybody know the weight difference between 79-86 vs 87-93 Fox bodies?
Dave, how far out can you bore/stroke the 2.3's?

The stock suspension on a 944 Turbo S would run circles around some of the best shit you could put on old POS notchback.
For that reason all the 944 would need is a new set of shocks and struts which will cost much less than an entire new suspension for the rustang. Maybe a new set of bushings if its getting a little too old.
For that reason you save the money you would spend on buying a whole new suspension for the ferd.
Bump the boost, change the chip and put some big rubber on it and you have a great car for both on and off the course that will be worth something instead of some shitty old frankenstang that will never be that good of an auto-x car and be a black hole for all the money you put into it.
For the $7-8K the 944 turbo will set you back what will you ever be able to achieve with an old turbo 2.3 notchback anyways?
And why bump to SM2. If you keep your mods mellow enough you won't bump, yet have the performance of a turbo miata.
If I lose the 930 a 944 Turbo is one of the options I'm concidering as a replacement.

Leonard, the weight difference is probably about 200 lbs, even more if you get creative with the wiring (leaving lights alone, but rewiring the rest of the car simplisticly).
You can go .030 over on a T2.3, but more than that and you'll need custom pistons. As far as stroke, you can get a factory crank that is 2.5 liter, but you'll need to run different pistons and rods (not a big deal if your going custom) and you'll need to run a newer block (89-up ranger or 91-93 stang) because the 2.5 has smaller main journals. The block and crank shouldn't be hard to find at all in the bone yard. Come to think of it the 2.5 may be a better bet to get more torque down low. Remember displacement isn't that big of a deal on a turbo car because the motor will make whatever power the turbo and head can provide.

The other thing you don't realize is just HOW good a Foxbody can be with the right mods. Is it competative in SM? Nobody knows because nobody has built one yet. Nobody has really built any car strictly for SM yet. Is my budget huge? No. Is it enough to put together a reasonably competative SM car? For local events -- absolutely. This would toast the cobra. Divisionals? I believe so. Nationals? It might. There is a lot of work to do though. Particularly creative interpretations of the rules. (example: Suspension is unlimited, but I can't touch the k-member. The car needs a lower CR, but lowering it without changing the pickup points on the K-member screws up the roll center. The solution: Creative spindles.). Those kinds of things will not be in version 1.0 of the car.
And, regardless, this will be a FUN car to drive. Do I keep A/C?
