What causes this?
not sure about the aode but i do know on toyota electronic trannys when the overdrive kicks in and out like that the solenoids are almost always the culprit.

If it's an AODE, you would have to adjust the TPS and trans range switch for shift points.
Is it shifting fine otherwise? Sounds like more of a Torque Converter Clutch(TCC) or solenoid issue.

When I take off from a start, it seems to be waiting for something before I get a sudden "hit" in the power department. I mean, it's like a trans with a shift kit going into 2nd gear or something. Really weird.
How's the fluid level/condition?

4.6 motor
Trans unknown. On the column it says P R N OD D 1
Dunno if that helps or not. LOL Fluid is fine. Nice dark red in color, and at the proper level too.

Just read the tech manual for your car from Autozone. It says your car has an AOD. It didnt specify AODE,.. just said AOD. In which case your car is the last year for the SBF bell pattern on the transmission. You have a 4.6 block that a T5/C4/C6 will actually bolt up to with out any modifications.
Anyway,.. there should be a cable. Detent cable is what I think its called. I want to stress again that I dont know dick about these tranny's. Zero hands on other then removing a few from Mustangs. But that cable needs to be there and needs to be properly adjusted. If its not,.. its supposed to damage the transmission.
I know you said your problem is with the cruise control,.. but just thought that might be of help to you.

The AOD's I know are supposed to have that cable.
I dont know if the AODE needs it or not. Having an electronic valve body an all. Its like in my truck. I have a 4L60E. It is a 700R4 with an electronically controlled valve body. Mechanically they are the same. But the 4L60E version does not have the detent cable like the 700R4 has. Its fully electronic. So if you have an AODE,.. it may not have any need for that cable and if so then this is a pointless avenue to keep working on. There would be something else wrong with the transmission if the problem is indeed with the transmission.
