Unhappy 2.3 turbo problems :(

not sure if anyone in this forum has ever owned one before, but ive seen a few ppl post their 2.3t's up on here. anyway heres the story. car runs fine when normal driving, but at WOT ill go into boost and at about 3500 rpm itl break up real bad, then clear out, and pull well from 4k to whenever i let out. ive checked for leaks and such and cleared them all up, disconnected the knock sensor, changed the oil and filter, etc... did everything i could think of so far to make the thing quit doing what its doing. fuel pressure is set at 39 psi, and i have the boost set at 14 psi just for now. im wondering if maybe its running too rich in that spot to do any good. if this is the case what can i do to fix it? i havent gotten my wideband on it so i dont know for sure but a few other ppl i have spoken with seem to agree. more boost? timing? anything? ive got new ignition parts and a vc gasket on the way for it, and a ranger roller cam that will go in when the vc is off. any suggestions are welcome. thanks in advance.

I wouldn't bother with the Ranger cam.

As for the hesitation, I'd check the VAM with a volt meter. See if it's got a dead spot in in somewhere.

Do you have an adjustable fuel pressure regulator? And if so, did you check the pressure with the vacuum line off?

+1 for VAM, if its stock it probably bad/dead spot. It does it free reving, the same as driving it?

how would it clear up if it were the plugs blowing out?....

Just suggestions May not be the problem, I always start with the basics with turbo cars before I make it a month long project for a set of plugs or something simple

fyi, my old turbo escort would blow out the plugs at the heaviest load i.e. 3000-4000 when the little ihi turbo was spinning the fastest, any time after that the ihi ran outta gas so to speak and it didn't feel like it was breaking up any more, I changed out the plugs and didn't have that problem again.

I got a little excited with the boost and blew a rod out the block a few months later though .

It could be happening at peak torque, which would be when cylinder pressure is at it's highest. That would be my best guess.

the ranger cam is just benificial bc its a roller cam. pretty muh the same grind. ive been told about the vam and im going to check that with the volt meter. but its only at WOT that this happens. the ignition parts are on the way. and yes i do have a kirban afpr and i checked it with the line off. 39 psi on the dot.

on another note, i had a bad night at work and was a little angry so i ran it thru the gears coming home. much to my delight, it didnt break up as bad, and was fully cleared out by 3500 and pulled well until i let out. it starts usually around 3200 and used to be real bad by 3500. now its a slight hesitation before it gets back to full boost. weird i know. perhaps i had some bad gas in there? ive run a couple tanks thru it now so maybe it is just about gone. again, the igition components are coming. perhaps i should grab some injector cleaner or something?
