Yeah, carbs are cool. I especially like them when the floats stick and they start barfing fuel everywhere. Power valves, jets, bleeders, squirters. Yeah I remember when my carb parts box weighed more than my tool box. They work...but they should...they have more experience than EFI. OTOH, Commodore 64's work too.

Carbs are the new EFI. Its a perfect circle.

I honestly believe there is a reason carbs still dominate the sport of racing. Think of them as the 5.0. They've been around so long,.. its like how fast you wanna go? Yeah,.. ok,.. here ya go,.. this will do exactly what you want. Proven formula's that have already had the guess work taken out of them.

They work and we know how they will work. Now there is almost a full generation that has no clue what or how a carb works,.. and they are scared of them.

I've heard everything from 'Carbs dont work if its too cold outside',..to 'carbs dont work on bouncy roads',. or my favorite,. 'Carbs arent reliable'.

I dont hate EFI. I just cant afford it and what comes with it. When EFI, the parts that go with it and all the tuning etc,. when those prices come down to a more realistice level I'll get back into it. Till then,.. I'll love on every carb conversion I do.

And on that 86,.. I said it was half assed. Dont throw that one back in my face LoL. That car has been parted out. I just wanted to get it running because someone told me I couldnt get it running.

Nah, I don't hate carbs, I've owned a ton of 'em. But to tell you the truth, I'm having a heck of a good time learning the inner workins of EFI. I do find it a little amusing that you carb guys keep harping on the cost of EFI yet you have no problem dropping a couple $K on some rims and $2k for a bare block and then your butt puckers at the thought of spending money on something that will give you infinitely more control over all your other expensive parts.

In the end, it's just another one of those either/or things that will get you where you want to go. I just like the challenge of learning a little more than how to read plugs and then having to dumb the engine down to the lowest common denominator (read adjust carb to cover the leanest cylinder) in order to keep it all together.

 

These problems are indicitive of any other thing. If you don't do any kind of preventative maintenance, then yes, things will mess up on you. The floats might stick if you get a dirty fuel filter and some grime gets into them....Just like the injectors will get clogged (with smaller particles) if you ignore the fuel filter. I've never had one do that to me yet...but I've only been running a carb for the last 17 years. But there's always tomorow I guess. Power valves...Same story. If the rest is taken care of, then you shouldn't have a problem. My jets, I only changed if I changed something else in the set up. (i.e. camshaft, heads, or intake. Maybe if I changed the height of the rear tires.) The squirters, I never had one get clogged. EVER. I only changed them to figure out the basic tune of the engine. Usually, it was not needed though.

New injector set: $250 (for anything above 19 lb)
Computer tune: $200-$400 (depending on who you use and how long it takes
Tuning computer if you wish to do it yourself: Unknown because of so many different choices. Roughly around $250-$1200 depending

You have to figure in replacing at least 2 sensors which will cost around $100 each if you're lucky also.

No, I'll always like my carbs better than FI. I still respect FI though because of it's ease of use. Put it in, and if none of the sensors are bad, it fires fright up. Not usually the case with a carb. With a carb, you have to tune it for it to even run at times. But I can do the carb work myself. I can't do anything to FI myself except replace the parts/sensors and hope for the best.

 

YEP, when any of the abouve happens I diagnose myself and fix for less than $20 bucks.
Like I stated earlier, FI is great when there is a warranty involved
