first doesnt make it the best. im going with the 5.4 GT motor

Well, being the latest doesn't make it the greatest either!

I figure something that's strong as hell right out of the box, common, cheap, PROVEN, easy to work on and to get parts for and to modify would be a good candidate. Something that's 'great' should defy certain characteristics, including cost (should be a good value). Paying a lot for something that's badass is expected, but getting more than you pay for is great!

HEY!!!
Nothing wrong with the 2.0 ZETEC. Wouldn't say its Ford's best motor, but its certainly a good one. The 2.0 liter in the SVT Focus was Ford's most technologically advanced motor they built until the release of the Ford GT.
They use the 2 liter motor in sprint car racing and I believe in Formula Fords.

5.4 GT motor - DOHC, Dry sump, aluminum, supercharged.... drool. You ask about potent and legendary. These are 2 different things. The 302 is the most popular over the years, but I really like the GT motor.
