Just go buy some washers and find out, I doubt a 1/4" would make it a problem.

was it just 1 tire? On the Corral it was noted that some cars have slight variyation from the factory on the rear being center, mine was off 1/2" on 1 side. at first I thought maybe my car was hit at some point before I had it. My 275/60 DR's rubbed on my pass side, little clearanced and no problem.

It doesn't have to be much. The rear end will move around some, but 1/2" gap should be fine. As the tire grows with speed, it will get narrower and taller, so if the side wall is rubbing, its probably not doing it at speed.
Go buy some play-doh, jack the car up, put a hunk on the tire where the gouge is and spin the tire. Check the play-doh to see if there's any marks on it.
