engine replacement, 2013 R/T 5.7 to a 2014 police 5.7I've just completed a engine replacement in my 2014 Police Charger 5.7L. The donor car was a 2013 Charger R/T 5.7L wreck and the swap went almost without issue. Start up went completely without problems, with the exception of clearing the air from the cooling system. After returning from the first test run I noted engine light was on and hooked the scanner up for a look. It had twenty codes in it, so I copied all codes and cleared them. Within seconds of clearing them, eight had returned and before I could even start writing them down all twenty had returned. BTW, engine runs great, transmission shifts great, all electronics seem to work fine. The codes appear to be three groups of six codes in the same order, with two exceptions.

P3401 Cyl 1 deactivation control circuit
P0013 Bank 1 camshaft 2 position actuator circuit open
P3425 Cyl 4 deactivation control circuit
P3441 Cyl 6 deactivation control circuit
P3449 Cyl 7 deactivation control circuit
P0032 02 sensor 1/1 heater circuit high

these two codes were only on the last of the three groups
U0140 Lost communication body module
P0113 air intake air temperature

On the R&R all the components on the 2013 donor engine was left on the engine and used in the 2014 car, including the deactivation solenoids and wiring harness under the intake.

I've been searching for answers for two days and have found nothing, any help would be appreciated.

Johnny

Did you keep the 2014 PCM in the car for the 2013 motor?
-----------------------------
Yes, I still have the 2014 PCM in the car, and I still have the 2013 R/T PCM also. I didn't think the 13 PCM would work with all the vin ID'd components in the 2014 Police charger? Maybe I was wrong?

I would start by going back through all the wiring harness connections and ground connections.
One of the common causes for the codes you posted is electrical ... ground circuit open, control circuit open, control circuit shorted to voltage or ground.

Nearly all of those codes relate to the MDS and VVT stuff under intake. They all share a common plug that's located on driver side on the rear head. Grey plug with one side having red stuff wrapped around wiring. I suggest taking look at it.
------------------------------

I agree this would probably be the best place to go to, and I did unplug, inspect, and replace this harness connection with no effect. But after you stating and reminding me nearly all codes are related to the MDS and VVT you might be right. I think I zeroed in on the U0140 because "lost communication" and assumed that was the central problem.
I'll pull the intake this afternoon and see whats going on, also I think I still have the harness I removed from the 2014 engine, so maybe I can verify all of the wires are going to the same places, possibly swap harnesses and see.

Ok, I removed the intake and checked out the wiring harness for the MDS and the VVT. None of the wires were shorted to ground or to each other, although I couldn't find the harness from the original engine I did find information saying all these were wired the same as far as wire color and pin position. Unplugging this harness does not change the codes.

After someone here on the forum asked about the donor PCM I decided what could it hurt, I'd try it to prove the PCM as the problem by trying it to see what codes returned. The only codes returned were, P3401, P3441, P3449, P3425, proving the PCM is not the problem with the MDS codes.

I've since learned that the car has a recall on some software issues in the PCM and is possibly related to the U0140 code. No idea how the P0013 camshaft activator, P0032 O2 sensor, P0113 air temp sensor, plays into this. I guess I should run the vin on the donor car to make sure the PCM recall had been done, if it has been that might explain the U code not coming back.

I think the more I learn about this, the more confused I am.

Wish I had better ideas.

I DO know that in 2013/14 the rear crankshaft reluctor ring was changed. Mostly width was changed. Same tooth count. Did you use the crank position sensor from the donor engine or your car?

Thanks for responding! You are right, originally I was told it was the 14-15 that had the reluctor ring change but luckily I found it was the 13-14 before I bought the donor car. But, still thought you might be on to something so I just checked and found they both use the doorman 907-792. Maybe I should go through all sensors and make sure they didn't change one of them.
I'm now grasping at straws, I found what appears to be a good explanation of what the MDS system does and how it does it along with a troubleshooting guide that looks good also, although it requires a real scanner. I have a friend coming over tomorrow night with his and hopefully we'll come up with something.

If you have some time, would you check this out and let me know what you think? James Anderson and Rob Waltasti on Chrysler MDS
Thank you very much
--------------------------------------------

Ok, after hooking the scanner up and clearing all codes present we started all over again. This scanner offered a "New Engine relearn", not real sure what that entailed but we did it. Completed a relearn on everything that it offered, including a phaser clean/flush. The only codes

returning were the four MDS and camshaft codes. We forced all four MDS solenoids to function and verified they were at least clicking. We then found the PCM was not communicating with the VVT, I've already swapped the cam sensor with no changes. So, I'm now leaning hard to the PCM as the problem.

Ok, so after finding no solutions to the problem I decided to start back with the wiring harness grounds. There is a ground eyelet on the harness that goes in one of the transmission to engine bolts just above the starter. It appears my bottom side man missed this during engine installation and this was the problem. After installing this ground and resetting the codes I started the engine and all codes cleared except four O2 sensor codes. Ended up swapping out all sensors with zero effect and then was told I probably fried the PCM because of the missing ground wire. I received my new/used re-flashed "Plug and Play" PCM Friday and installed it this morning, cleared a long list of stored codes and everything is working as it's supposed to work. That was a tremendous amount of work, worry, and money for a missed ground.
