Note: I won’t go over how to remove the steering wheel to your charger since there are a few how to’s on how to do that. It will be required if you have the steering wheel bezel for the column shifter. Also make sure that you have all the parts needed including the column shifter cable. The floor shifter cable will not work with the column shifter.



1.Start by prying off the plastic pieces for center console shifter. Make sure that your vehicle is in park with the emergency brake on just in case. The last thing you want is your vehicle rolling when you swap out shifter cables. (I’m not quite sure with the electric shifter since my vehicle is a 2011).

2.When you have the center shifter console piece removed you will notice 4 10mm bolts that keep the floor shifter in place. Use either a socket set or an electrical or air socket set to remove the 4 bolts.

3.After removal of the nuts the shifter will be loose. If you notice on the front right hand side of the shifter you will see the shifter cable attached. All you have to do is pull it out which will require some force.

4.Next you will have open the center console compartment and remove the 4 8mm screws that hold the center console in place. After removal of these screws the center console should be loose enough for you to remove the floor shifter.


5. Once you remove the floor shifter out of the center console you will notice a 6 pin harness attached to the floor shifter. Go on ahead and disconnect it as you will need that 6 pin harness for the column shifter.





6.Putting the floor shifter aside, you can start by using the 6 pin harness from the column shifter and plug it into the 6 pin harness from the vehicle wiring harness. Go on ahead and turn on your vehicle and test your column shifter and make sure that it goes through all the gears as it’s suppose to. If it doesn’t then it will require some additional testing to make sure that everything works correctly. For me, the 6 pin harness from the column shifter matches and works perfectly like factory. Note: After testing the harnesses you will have to extend the wires out in order for it to work. I used some 14 gauge wires I bought at Walmart and worked just fine for me. All you need to do is match it wire for wire and rather solder or use any method your comfortable with to make sure the wires have a permeant connection.

7.After testing you can now proceed to dismantling the speedo bezel by removing the steering wheel from the vehicle. (Note: I won’t be going over how to remove the steering wheel.)

8.Just like doing a 4.3 screen to 8.4 screen swap you’ll follow those same steps in order to remove the steering wheel. You’ll need to remove the dash panel and lower dash panel out in order to remove and replace the steering wheel bezel and replace it with the column shifter version.

9.After removal, you’ll need to cut off a section of plastic that is on the right hand side of the steering wheel in order for the column shifter level to come out.

10.After removing the plastic section off there should be open space for the shifter lever to come out.


11.Next up, you’ll need to remove the dash bezel off in order to position the column shifter unit plate with the two holes that are located next to the vent on the left hand side of the 4.3/8.4 screen. Once you have removed it, the fun part comes were you will have to position the two holes that are on the frame with the shifter plate to match them up. Once you do that, I would recommend using two bolts, screws or something to put them in place. Note: This was the hardest part of the conversion process because you have to line it up just right.




12.Once you have it aligned get your drill and depending on what your using to bolt on the plate to the frame make sure that your drill bit is long and not short. Otherwise the drill will also start scaving away into the dash itself.

 

13.After you drill your hole, you can make a second if you want for durability if you wish. If not one should be good enough. All you need to do is get your bolt and tighten it down. Once you do this make sure and test to see if your unit is planted in place. If not making a second hole in the frame might be a good idea.

14.Alright, you completed the first half of the install, it’s up to you if you want to take a break or not at this point since it’s not going to be too difficult from here. Moving on, given if you manage to get your hands on the column shifter bezel from a police package charger or manage to find one you’ll need to remove the steering wheel in order to swap them out. If you have a different means of making this happen (meaning using your current one and make a hole yourself) then you don’t have to remove the steering wheel.


15.Now you should have a sturdy column shifter ready to go, like I said again make sure to test it to see if everything is planted in place and not going anywhere. You can even hook up the harnesses if you want to take it a bit further with testing.


16.Next up, we need to remove the floor shifter cable and swap it out with the column shifter one. Believe me the floor cable will not work with the column shifter I can guarantee that. Swapping them out is not difficult at all. Just elevate the car up on jack stands or you can use ramps if you wish. Open the hood and you will see the shifter cable come out through the firewall of the vehicle. All that you need to do is pull it out. It will take some force but the rubber seal will come out and the shifter cable will be free.



17.Going underneath the car, next to the oil pan you’ll find the pin where the end of the shifter cable along with the lever I was talking about earlier. All you’ll need to do is use a flat head screw driver and pop out the shifter cable. After that just remove the two 13mm bolts that hold the shifter cable in place.


18.After that, just remove the cable from the vehicle. To install the new one just reverse step 17 and 16. It should be pretty much swap and play.


19.Alright, after bringing in the shifter cable through the firewall the tricky part is to connect it to the silver ball that’s located at the bottom of the unit. It’ll take some force but should snap on into place. Once you do this, you can now test and see if everything is working correctly. You’ll feel that when you shift in reverse it should be where it’s at when you had the floor shifter. Same thing for neutral and Drive along with Park. If you want just put the car in reverse if you have the vehicle on the ramps and see if the vehicle backs up like it’s suppose to or if you have the vehicle on jacks just lower and remove jacks and test the vehicle to make sure it’s doing what it’s suppose to.



20.After testing everything out you should be all ready to go. Just put everything back together and you have yourself a column shifter. It may feel a little weird at first not having anything in the center in front of the cup holders but you’ll get use to and enjoy some extra space for anything you need it for.

I just finished my 2012 Dodge Charger Persuit conversion from column shifter to floor console shifter.

Parts you will need:
floor shifter unit
armrest floor console
shifter cable, part number #0457 8758 AE
shifter bezel.

1. Set parking break, block tires and remove the negative ground wire from the battery.
2. Jack up vehicle, using a screw driver pry off the shifter cable from the transimission mount, I had to break the old shifter cable to completely remove from circular mount. Now attach the new shifter cable. Snake the new shifter up in front of the fire wall next to the old shifter cable and let it lay on top of motor.
3. from under the steering wheel, remove knee airbar and module on top of bag.
4. remove radio bezel, disconnect the wires from the radio and careful not to break the vents.
5. loosen and move forwad the shifter boot bezel. underneath the boot you will find a screw, remove screw and slide shifter out and disconnect harness from shifter.
6. with a screw driver pry off the shifter cable from shifter assembly.
7. remove harness from shifter assembly.
8. remove two screws attaching the shifter assembly to the dash board. remove mounting plat from shifter and remove. Now remove the shifter.
9. Now remove shifter cable from fire wall, pull out center wedge, this removal will require some force.
10. Install new shifter cable into hole the old shifter cable came out of, use dish soap to lubricate.
11. From inside of vehicle and under the dash, locate new shifter cable and snake it under the dash to console shifter location. connect to floor shifter. make sure transmission is in park and selector on shifter is in park. connect shifter cable and tighten adustment.
12. There is a small wiring harness, located on the column shifter, the wiring harness from the dash plugged into this. remove this from the old shifter. You will have to cut all the wires and solder in a 3 foot length of wire for each wire. be careful to match the wires and use heat shrink to cover the connections. Secure the wiring harness using flexible conduit or electrical tape and connect the dash board wiring harness with the new shifter.
13. Connect everything back, connect the battery and take for test drive. if everything is ok, finish up by installing your console over your console shifter. Depending on your model of persuit, you may or may not have connections for the usb, lights, cigarrette lighters.

What center console did you have before the conversion? I just saw this one and was drooling but realized it would not work with my 8-speed shifter.

 

I completed my conversion last Friday.....i have a 07 5.7L. I purchase the console from a guy off of craigslist for 80 dollars an it was the complete console...i had to purchase the ashtray but everything else came with it... I purchased a cable off ebay for 45...the shifter for 73...an the six pin connector kit from moparamerica for 44... I had a diagram for the 6 pin wiring... The cloumn shifter came with a 12 pin an i had to cut 5 wires out an connected them to the six pin an then plugged it into the shifter..i left the steering column shiter mounted under the dash....i love the floor shiter an the auto stick is amazing...
