my bike backfires as I start to back off the throttle

I have a 2006 FLHRS and have often noticed that my bike backfires as I start to back off the throttle. Today it was pretty bad and I actually applied the choke to smooth it out some. Any ideas what I should check first? I appreciate all the posts and responses, definitely helps.

Hi, Jim. Sounds like you are describing a lean condition. If it has got progressively worse, you may be looking at bad intake seals. Feeling the need to use your enrichener when the bike is already warm, may also indicate a blocked slow jet (intermediate jet). Suggest pulling the carb. Clean/rebuild it and replace intake seals and intake flanges.
