I have an NJK leather jacket. Its heavy, thick, and has great shoulder and elbow protection. The best part is the price, I got it for $265 shipped. PM RacerRaul, he might be able to still get them. He also has the same jacket and went down at over 100mph at Jennings. He had Cortech gloves, a KBC helmet, NJK leather jacket, and Alpinestar pants. All of this stuff held up great, he had no rash at all. I also have a Suomy Spec1R helmet and it rocks! It breathes so well that your face is cold with the mouth vent closed and it will NEVER fog!. Just make sure you dont get the inside of the sheild wet or the anti-fog coating will peel.

Mesh and textile jackets can provide good protection, but will pretty much be obliterated after a fall. On the otherhand, for those hot FL summers, they're going to be alot cooler. Leather, ofcourse would be the ultimate protection and durability...but can become a sticky situtation. In either case, look for a jacket with CE approved armor. I went with a mesh jacket for the summer and plan on getting a decent leather jacket when the weather becomes a little more tolerable.

Glove wise, I personally went with a full glove, gauntlet (full cuff), full armor, leather. Like was said, hands are one of the most important things in your life...protect them well.

As far as helmets go, from my research and talking to people, most approved helmets all will provide similar levels of protection...whether they it be a $100 helmet or a $600 helmet. The main difference is the manufactur!ng process, fit, feel, and comfort. The cheaper helmets usually are made in a mold using a polycarbonate (like lexan) material, while the more expensive ones are a composite (like fiberglass) material which involves more hands-on fabrication which in turn allows for a more streamlined design. Like I said though, protection wise, they are all very similar.

Other than that, imo, long pants and a sturdy closed toe shoe would be acceptable. A very important factor in all cases is the proper fitment, make sure your gear isn't too big or it's not going to do as much good as it should.

I ride w/ a Cortech textile jacket and Cortech Accelerator gloves...I think both are very comfortable and last but not least a Shoei RF-1000...Ive got a Scorpion exo700 Crackhead in the mail somewhere as we speak...

Tour Master Cortech GX Air Jacket - Motorcycle Superstore
Tour Master Accelerator Glove - Motorcycle Superstore

My big thing was I didnt have a ton of money to get leathers and get the best name for gear but I knew I had to have a helmet, jacket and gloves minimum...Boots, Leathers and spine protector are in the near future...

Helmet and gloves then jacket, boots and pants! Also gloves ,jacket and pants need to have some kind of armor in them! Go to denniskirk.com and check out there outlet store! Sometimes you can find some amazing deals there! you just have to keep checking though because people snatch that stuff up quick! I just purchased an alpinestar jacket with elbow, back, forearm and shoulder armor for $45.00 so you just got to look for the deals! You need to go to one of the local shops and try on the different brands to check for sizing! Good Luck!!!
