Stuff.
Wow, it's been a while since I've browsed for new stuff on the forum.
Anyway, here's my take on the question at hand:
1. Get better tires in a proper size FIRST. You may find that you really don't need to go to some insane width. Try a set of Azenis in the proper size and see how you feel. If you don't like them... they won't last long, anyway.
2. As Leonard hinted at, "pinching" wide tires onto a narrow wheel compromises the sidewall integrity. The reduces the tires ability to respond to steering inputs and if the tire is properly inflated, can also cause the tread area to crown thereby reducing your contact patch. (drag racers don't care, they just lower the pressure to get the contact patch back... but YOU would like the car to turn, wouldn't you?)
3. Look at the specs on the particular tire you are contemplating. Some tires are designed to work with narrower wheels than others are. The 245/45ZR17 Falken is spec'ed for an 8" wheel. (and would work even better on a 9" wheel)
4. If you're going to BUY wheels for a particular tire size, get the right sized wheel! If you want to run 275's, don't buy an 8" wheel. Buy a 9 or 10" wheel.
5. Nah, I'll quit now.
