j30 diff problem
j30 pumpkin has huge bolt holes ("ears") near the input flange, where the 240sx has normal (3/8") holes.
Does this sound familiar??

yeah dude thats my post on FA. i posted a few places cuz no one wants to give me any answers, and i did do some searchin and came up empty. it does have the big ears your talkin about.
really? That's a J30/Z32/S14 housing. Most likely it is the original J30 housing. My brother's diff had this problem when I put the guts into an S13 case. It also had this problem again when I swapped it to a different S13 case. The problem is that the machined section of the flange (the part with the slashed oiling channels) hits the part that the bearings press on to. If you'll also notice, the other side will press in intirely too far. This caused an oil leak on the first housing we had. I'm not entirely sure what the hell is going on with this misfitment, but I want to say that it's related to the thick preload shim inside the diff. The thick shim is almost the exact width that the flanges are off by. Of course if you moved it to the other side, your diff will be way out of whack on the tooth engagement. That's about as far as I got with the problem. If you get any farther, I'd surely be glad to know what the deal is. I'd also be happy to play with it, if you get fed up.
By the way, if you give up and install it anyways, it will eat up the passenger side axle within 5k miles. heh.
