I have a Techtonic Tuning (www.tttuning.com) exhaust on my truck. Their quality is really good and it isnt too loud. You have a lot of options and as long as you keep the center resonator in the system it shouldnt be too loud. I would watch www.vwvortex.com for a group buy.

Do I need to convert to a dual outlet exhaust from an older Rabbit to use a TT exhaust?

You can use the TT exhaust with the stock downpipe and cat but the 83-84 manifold and downpipe were probably the worst that were ever produced by VW. I would get a dual outlet exhaust manifold and a TT dual outlet downpipe. I probably have a dual outlet manifold. Let me know if you need it.
