ignition switch, and being a 90 it might be digi ??, could be the transfer pump in the tank,
are the plug wires on right and dubble check make sure the distributor is timed right,

1.8t's dont have plug wires or a distributor.


do you have access to a VAG-COM or at least a OBDII scanner?

umm the dude is talking bout a 90 gti those did not come with 1.8T's and it does not say anything bout a swap so im gonna assume its got wires and a dist.

Most likely mass air sensor.

The mass air flow sensor on this car is more like a swinging door. At the top of the unit there is a carbon, half moon shaped, pad that the brush picks up how much air is flowing into your engine. If it is worn out it will not start at all. On my 89 golf i had the same problem you are having and that was what it was. Also check to make sure it is plugged in. sometimes it looks connected but for one reason or another the pins and sockets do not connecting inside the connector itself.
