Default Need Help

OK so my buddies (sb42991 "scott") GTI vr6. his shifter seems to have "moved" to the right. in other words his 1st gear is about on top of 3rd and 5th is way over the entire center consul. however when he puts it in reverse, reverse is where it should be. does anyone know what the problem might be with that. does it have to do with the setup under the shift boot or would that be the linkage? any help would be great. if you need anymore info just ask. thanks

With some cars, there is a horizontal bolt through the shift linkage
on one or both ends, sometimes going through a rubber bushing.

If that nut comes off, and the bolt slides almost out of the hole,
the shifter will tilt to one side in the manner which you describe
just before it falls out.

You might check the shift rod ends, and see if yours was designed in a similar manner.

When I put a linkage back together, if it did not have nylock nuts on the bolt to keep it from coming loose, I would add them. Lowes and also Ace Hardware has some metric bolts....-Bob
