Question Need some help and advice.

Well I was planing on moding my B5 A4 1.8T some time in the future. I was going to do some things here and there and than finally upgrade the turbo. Well, things have changed. About a week ago I started to notice that my car was not accelerating as usual. Then a day later it wasn't accelerating at all. I knew what it was but I didn't want to come to a conclusion yet. So I took it to a local shop and had a guy test drive it. He came to the same conclusion as I did. My turbo was gone. I now have the first Audi A4 1.8. Well I could go ahead and put in a new KO3 but If I was planning to upgrade it later why spend money for a turbo Im just going to take out later. So my question is what would be a good turbo upgrade?
I have done tons of research but I didn't come up with much.

I have goten mixed reviews from the KO4. Does anyone here have one?

Also, if hes saying it locked up or something, your check engine light will probably go on since the engine wont see the requested boost pressure that the ECU is asking for. VWs have a tight grip on boost pressure. It asks for a certain pressure and if it doesnt get it(verified by the pressure sensor in the intercooler tank) the ECU lets you know it.
Well it didn't smoke but the turbo doesn't spool anymore. Plus the car runs fine but just slow ass hell. Its very slugish and my mpg is horrible right now. My engine light isn't on either. So I really don't know. He said he's seen this happen before. Its the only thing I could really think of.

If you end up confiming it is the turbo, I would go with a GT28RS.

Can you place me somewhere I can read up on that one. Can't find anywhere with good info.

Another question, is a T3/T4 any good? A friend of mine is selling a new one. I hear all you get is a lot of lag. Is that so?

A T3/T4 isn't a bad choice, I like the GT series better though.

the t3/t4 is a good turbo cause its a hybrid, but has a peek....the gt28rs aka the disco potato is a dual ball bearing turbo, and keeps its power threw the torque band, not just a peek at a specific point, i would go with a turbo that is ball bearing just for that fact...and for a vw/audi the gt28rs is the best choice....
