if you had to choose....
beetween a 1995 gti 4cyl that needs no work and a 1999 gti vr6 wich needs some work wich would it be? i would go into more detail but i havent seen the vr6 in about 3 months so idk if anything else is worng with it from last time i saw it. The vr6 all it has done to it is a chip and exhaust i think and probably an intake but im not sure, and all leather interior,. But the 95 gti needs no work except paint. it has full catback exuast, ram air intake, 17"rims and hes gunna give me everything he ever took off the car. these two people are both my freinds, and both happened to offer me the cars around the same time. So what would you choose?
Well first off I would go with the VR6. A. its a VR6 and B. its a newer year than the other. Thats just me.
You need to ask yourself........
How many miles are on them? How much is the price diff? How much are you willing to spend? If the VR6 needs work then how much is it gona cost to fix? Is it a major problem? What do you want the car for? Is it a Daily Driver or something to play with? Those are just a few.

Depends whats wrong with the VR....
VRs are more expensive to service, and the good thing about a 2.slow is they are about everywhere these days meaning you can get used parts for cheap..
Its gotten to the point now when a 2.0 ends up in LKQ up here in Orlando(basically Cophers) two weeks later you still have a real good chance of getting just about anything off the car.. meanwhile if a 93 Passat with a VR and an engine fire is put out there in 3 hours its stripped to a bare shell.
And like I said, it depends on whats wrong with the VR car.. Its not very old and should not have problems in the first place, which leads me to beleive the car might not have been very well kept...As my mom always says about cars I buy, you could very well be buying someone elses headache.

If memory serves the timing chain on the VR6 should be replaced at around 110k, and shops charge around $1000 to do it. You see most VR's for sale around that mark because they don't want to have to pay for it.
The 2.slow isn't that slow anymore when you put a BBM lysholm on it.
I personally would go with the 2.slow, but I'm odd like that.
