my friends vr6 used to do the same thing, i say maf.
Always good to check air/fuel filter.
Diagnostic from a shop wont hurt tho.

MAF is more likely than the coilpacks, to check for sure just unplug it. If it runs smoother than you have found your problem.

another shot that everyone looks over is the throttle position sensor. that can cause you to putt and surge.

Yes what Caan said. If the MAF is faulty and sending bad signals, unplugging it causes the ECU to use default maps. If it runs smoother unplugged, than it safe to assume that the MAF is bad.
