vr6, vr6, or 1.8t?
which one do you like the most and which one in your oppinion has the MOST potential which one can be made fast the cheapest and which one has been the most reliable? post what you think about each motor..
This has been beat to death but I say VR6. Plenty of high HP VR's running around that are reliable if done right. Also no 1.8t can touch the 9.69@145 a VR6 powered MK3 Jetta ran. All in all, they are all VW's so I like them all.
VR6 fo life!!!
VR6 fo life!!!
VR6 Most potential. 1.8T can be built a lot cheaper. Cheaper doesn't mean better for all the reasons that Biscuit Man listed. VR6's can handle anything you throw at them. I've owned both 1.8T (150hp and 180hp) and I don't think either can touch the VR6. I just think it is a superb engine.

VR6 has the most potential eh?
on a stock bottom end, runs 10s, and it's daily driven
Just wait till he finishes building the motor.
Yes EIP has a 600hp VR6, but not only is it a R32 (almost twice the size of a 1.8t), but it also has a fully built motor. You are looking a near $20K on top of buying an R32, IF EIP ever releases the kit. You could always go with HPA that only charges $12K for the singe turbo kit or $25k for the twin turbo kit
.
As for real world numbers I haven't seen one 24v with EIP's stg 2 ever get the claimed 350-400whp. The closest I've seen is ~340whp
, while there are many 1.8t's with over 350whp.
This topic is definately been beaten to death all over the internet, and is just an extension of the old "no replacement for displacement
" argument. The answer depends on the driver. If you want a well rounded, nice stock powerband, that you can mod a little, or have 20K to waste on modding a VW go with a VR6. (Personally if I had that much money to waste, I would drop the VW and buy an S4) If you want easily modded engine with a catalog of parts available and easily capable of high hp on a budget go with the 1.8t.
In the end, it's what ever floats your boat

If you look at that dyno chart you realize the powerband of a 1.8t is nothing like a VR6. The power doesn't come on for that car until 5000+ rpms, not exactly a huge powerband, you would run out of gear real quick once you are in the power.
Also on the topic of EIP's stuff, who cares about what they have to offr, there are plenty of other VR tuners out there. Schimmel Performance had a lot to do with Kirchberger's jetta (which was a 12V VR6). You talk like it takes 30,000 to make a VR6 fast and the R32 is the only car with a VR. If you want fast cheap power, get a MK3 VR6 GTI, and get a turbo kit for under $3500 or spend more and blow the doors off of a lot of cars. Nothing sounds better than a VRT.

I really like both motors, If you are looking for a reliable car to last a long time then I would go with the VR but to be honest if you are looking for bang for the buck then I would say 1.8t would be the way to go. There small motors are made up for by their ability to have big hp gains from bolt-ons
I have a question for all you VR guys... if we were at a VW meet would you look down upon a 1.8t driver or would you "appreciate" if you will what they like or what they are into? I ask this because last time I was at a meet all the VR guys went to go out to eat some where and told all the people with 2.0 or 1.8 that they werent invited because they werent "true VW drivers"
