Default VW Bus transmission question

I was wondering if it was possible to put an automatic transmission into a manual bus. The bus would probably be from 1960's 70's. I need an automatic to drive but I want one of the old busses with their body style. Let me know if it is possible or too much of a pain in the ass. I dont know that much about engines and trans but I will learn if this is possible. I'd like to stay away from the pancake engine (if thats possible with an automatic.) Thanks

Yes, it can be done but would require some major work. Why not just look for a bus with an automatic? They Type 4 motor in the later model buses (>70's) isn't a bad motor. They are just a little different than the standard Type 1 motor in the earlier buses, plus they have a lot more power.

Thanks. I am looking at some 70's buses that have the automatic. But I like the 50's and 60's style body with the split windows. I dont want the pancake engine because its a pain to work on. But if I'm going to have to do all this work anyway, it doesnt really matter. So your saying I would probably have to put in a type 4 motor for the auto tranny to work, and that its possible but it would be a pain in the arse? Thanks again for the help.

the pancake motor is awsome to work on. why get rid of it? ex. new cylinders are like $200 and can be changed with ease.

It's been awhile for me, but I don't believe they made a 60's bus with the Type 1 upright motor and an automatic tranny. If you really wanted to, you could always convert over to a bug auto tranny in an early bus. But again, that would require some fabrication work.

Check out http://shoptalkforums.com. They can give you some definitive answers over there. It's a great aircooled site.
