anybody know if i can remove the airbox on the 16v?

do i have to have that box .. the fuel distrubitor is on it and i just dont want the box, its big and uses lots of space, what im doing now is i removed the filter in the box and put a cone on the opening of the closed box..looks very ghetto but works, just wish there was a better way, ive seen some people mutilate theirs
