Default 2001 Jetta Wolfsburg

GLS 1.8T 20v

How many lbs. is the stock setup on? What type of turbo? (dimensions, etc.)

With a boost controller, what is the most boost you can run safely?

I got the same exact yr and model u do and i installed a boost guage in it and it pushes 7 lbs stock, but i threw a getto boost controller on it and got 11 lbs out of it and she flies. don't worry bout over boostin cause i had my controller set a bit hi and the needle flew to 15lbs when i floored it and some valve opened (the one next to the bov) and the boost went to 5, so i guess vw was smart and put some saftey thing on there so i dosent blow.

That's called soft limp and it's not a good thing. Kyle's right, go with a chip you'll get more power and it's also a much more reliable solution.

Turbo is probably same one as the one in my avatar. Small, crappy, but spools like a mofo. Its done at ~2-3k RPMs but only ~9psi. Stops getting efficiency at ~13psi I've heard, DEFINETLY chip it though. Stock turbo is a Blitz KKK KO3, people upgrade to KO4s, T3/T4s, and a common but expencive one is the one I'm doing, the Disco Potato (GT28RS). The latter is your best bet for simple power, and theres a kit out for it, or should be anyways.

Kyle's right, get chipped. I push 15lbs and spike to 18 under hard acceleration w/ APR's chip, which also provides the right amount of fuel for the higher boost levels

15lbs??, I find that hard to believe. R u running that on the stock turbo? and what type of diverter valve do u got cause the stock one opens at about 13 lbs. The stock turbo is no good after about 13 lbs, I am surprised that your intake manifold gasket or head gasket hasent blown yet...

So there isnt a way to raise the boost temporarily at all? Until we can get the chip or whatever?

The k03 can safely run no more than 15lbs sustained. Most chips you buy will put the k03 at around 1bar (14.7lbs). Stock is about 10psi i think.. But if you're talking about boosting more than 13 all the way through than you're slightly correct. The k03 is too small to run high sustained boost at higher rpms. The turbo gets "exhausted" towards redline and boost will start to taper.
The stock diverter valve opens regardless of the psi - that's why there's a vacum line attached to them. When you create any significant boost the vacum helps pull it open. Upgrading your diverter valve will not make a noticable change on the performance of the turbo! The 1.8t is a strong motor. The turbo will go way before the motor goes. For a whole lot of info try the vortex forums...
