That last scene has always struck me, when Sheen is walking down the steps of the temple and the people are all bowing to him. It harkens back to that earlier scene when JD Spradlin says to Sheen that it must be a great temptation for a regular man, confronted with this situation, to become a god. Kurtz succumbed to that temptation but Willard does not..

And the ending where that mountain yard army and their village were in fact blown up in the ending scene was the ending I saw in the theater, because I watched it about 6 times in the span of 2 weeks when that film first came out in 1979. But to my surprise, there is no after market film version with that ending in it, how unfortunate because it was a powerful ending that showed a complete end to the horror Col. Kurtz had created from his madness.

Did you know that at the end where there are silent apocalypse night time fireworks? The song "the end" is synced to each explosion and fireworks I did it and it was amazing!

I liked the film when I originally saw it although I never really understood what the hell was going on with Brando's character, or Brando himself for that matter. I had studied Heart of Darkness in either high school or college and knew the book, so I had a vague idea of the story. I can't see much reason for documenting animal slaughter or honoring backward,

Stone Age people's ignorance and sickening, constant sacrificing of animals, however. The body count certainly is high in Coppola movies. Dozens, at this point, plus animals now. It's a bit much. He should try a love story some time.
