In RACER Magazine: To Finnish First

Sitting on the second floor of the Mercedes Formula 1 team's palatial motorhome on a hot afternoon in central Europe, a championship contender strides confidently across the dark wooden floor to a sun-kissed table protected by tinted glass.
"So, Valtteri, I'd like to talk about something with a very Finnish focus..."
"Good," Valtteri Bottas smiles as he sits forward, ready for what he hopes will be an interesting topic.
"OK, sisu..."
RACER's pronunciation is immediately corrected in a manner that suggests Bottas has had to do it on multiple occasions.
"Is it a real thing?" I ask.
"It's a word..." he shrugs.
Perhaps the topic isn't as intriguing as I'd hoped. But there's a mischievous grin on the face of the 27-year-old that suggests he's going to enjoy disproving the theory.
The confidence with which Bottas carries himself is impressive. His demeanor hasn't changed since his move from Williams to Mercedes for 2017, entering what's seen as Lewis Hamilton's team and going toe to toe with the triple world champion. But then again, it should be no surprise, as little seems to faze the Finns...
Sisu, a peculiarly Finnish and somewhat mysterious take on strength of will and rationality in the face of adversity, clearly isn't something that will get Bottas particularly animated either, as he doesn't view it as a tangible that exists.
"It's a saying," he explains. "I think Finns are a little bit their own type of people. Compared to other countries we're quite quiet and we don't tend to give up easily. It's kind of a meaning for willpower, mental strength and that kind of thing.
"It's just...someone made a word for it. I don't believe in magic, so I don't believe sisu is a magic thing. It's just how Finns are. It's the description for our traits."

For a country with a population of just 5.5 million people, Finland has a remarkable hit rate in motorsports. Rallying continues to be a hotbed of talent, and while drivers reaching Formula 1 are not huge in number, they certainly are in success (see sidebar, page 79).
Finland's F1 history got off to an inauspicious start, with the late Leo Kinnunen becoming its first driver in 1974. He drove a leased Surtees TS16 under the AAW team name, which stood for Antti Aarnio-Wihuri – aptly, the head of the Wihuri group that now backs Bottas. The team lasted one year, and Kinnunen qualified just once in six attempts.
Since then things have been much more impressive. Of the seven Finns since Kinnunen to start a grand prix, five have won a race, and three – Keke Rosberg, Mika Hakkinen (twice) and Kimi Raikkonen – became Formula 1 World Champion.

[h=2]RACER@25: Issue No. 241, May 2012 - Game Changer - the RACER 3.0 era begins[/h] Friday, 28 April 2017

This is the 22nd installment in RACER's ongoing 25th anniversary celebration during which we share the 25 most important issues from our first quarter century.

[HR][/HR] It's been said you can't go home again, but RACER founders Paul Pfanner and Bill Sparks had the opportunity to do just that when Haymarket Media offered them the chance to reacquire the company they had started twenty years earlier. The fateful call came in early December 2011, and the next 100 days saw a flurry of activity to make the improbable deal happen. Working secretively with RACER's editor-in-chief, Laurence Foster, Pfanner and Sparks put together a plan they named "RACER 3.0" and secured the backing of RACER-1.0 era investors Rob and Chris Dyson. Their goal was to relaunch the company with the 20th-anniversary edition of RACER magazine and then focus on rebooting RACER.com, in-house agency Racer Studio and reviving the flagging fortunes of RACER's sister title, SportsCar, which had been published by the company for the SCCA since 1984. The deal was finally done on March 18, 2012, and Pfanner and Sparks walked into the office late on the morning of March 19, 2012 to reassume control of the company.
The company they returned to was a faint shadow of what it once was commercially. RACER circulation was less than a third of what it had when the founders left the company in December 2005, but thankfully, RACER still had a world-class creative team in place. With barely a month before an all-new RACER was to be revealed to the world during the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach weekend, Laurence Foster, editor David Malsher, executive editor Andrew Crask and art director Rob French set to work on a totally revamped magazine that carried the theme "Game Changers." The cover feature spotlighted the recently introduced DeltaWing Le Mans and ALMS prototype that was the striking vision of designer Ben Bowlby, ALMS entrant Duncan Dayton, the original game-changer Dan Gurney and serial entrepreneur and game-changer Don Panoz. An expansive In Focus photo section by Rick Graves gave RACER's readers full access to this radical sports car that polarized the racing world.

[h=2]RACER Magazine: The 2017 Formula 1 Issue[/h] Monday, 02 October 2017

It's a fickle thing, this motorsports game. When we started planning our Formula 1 content for this issue of RACER, Sebastian Vettel was leading the points for Ferrari, Max Verstappen was the unluckiest man in racing, and a warring Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon looked odds-on for pink slips from the pink-hued Force India team.
One month on, Verstappen is celebrating his second grand prix victory just one day after his 20th birthday. Perez and Ocon are playing nice again and remain gainfully employed, while Vettel now has a mountain to climb if his fifth Formula 1 World Championship is to become a reality in 2017.
Vettel's change in circumstance – from seven points ahead of Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton, pre-Monza, to 34 points in arrears, post-Malaysia – was partly down to Mercedes getting in the groove with its fast, yet flighty W08. But the bigger factor by far was Vettel's split-second decision to block Verstappen on the run down to Singapore's first turn. With Vettel's Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen also closing in, the inevitable clash removed all three.
You don't always make your own luck in racing, but in Vettel's case, the vast majority of a point swing in just two races was self-inflicted. If, as seems likely, he does miss out on the title, he can look back on his ill-conceived and crudely-executed move in Marina Bay as a defining moment.
For the most part, Verstappen's awful 2017 luck hasn't been of his own making. Seven DNFs in the first 14 GPs sounds like a statistic from the 1970s, and Red Bull Racing knows the pressure's on if it's to keep him beyond 2018. Despite it all, the Dutchman remains upbeat and pragmatic, as RACER's Chris Medland found when he sat down with Max.
