Welcome to the first of my monthly blog posts covering what is happening in the world of RACER and racing in general. I hope you enjoy it and find the information useful.

Twenty-five years ago this week, our team was preparing to launch RACER Magazine, which debuted in April 1992. None of us could have imagined how much the racing world and media landscape would change. George H. Bush was in the White House and the CART PPG IndyCar World Series was the leading form of racing in North America with Michael Andretti recently crowned as champion. Dale Earnhardt was NASCAR Winston Cup Series champ for the fifth time and Richard Petty was preparing for his final season as a driver. In Formula 1, Ayrton Senna and McLaren Honda reigned supreme, but rookie sensation Michael Schumacher was seen as the future of the sport.

Modern society's embrace of the internet was still a few years away. Conventional wisdom of the day was that racing publications needed to be weekly or biweekly and news-centric to succeed. But RACER debuted as a beautiful feature magazine that was different in every way. RACER wasn't about what happened, but instead, why it happened and what might come next. Today, after 281 issues, RACER still sets the pace for the industry in North America.
During the past quarter century, we've seen the fall of CART, the rise of NASCAR, five iterations of IMSA, the birth of social media and the disruption of traditional mass media. Experts say that one form of media being aided in this unprecedented turbulence is niche media aimed at categories driven by passion. Small is now the new big. RACER is surely benefiting from this phenomenon across all of our media and social media platforms.
As many of our readers and customers are aware, the founders re-acquired RACER in March, 2012 after an 11-year period of ownership by Haymarket Publishing. To be fair, some racing series sites have ended their seasons so their traffic has dropped as a result. However, RACER.com has been consistently ranked in the top four of this competitive set all year long. The racing season doesn't end when the last checkered flag falls. Racing fans, participants and industry insiders continue to engage in the sport all year round.

Just how important is speed? For IndyCar and NASCAR, the official line is that speed still has meaning and relevance, but not to the detriment of the quality of the racing, or safety.
Seems reasonable enough, and in the case of the Verizon IndyCar Series and Indianapolis Motor Speedway, it doesn’t close the door on someone finally breaking Arie Luyendyk’s 237.498mph single-lap record or 236.986mph four-lap average, both set more than two decades ago in May 1996. But as Mark Glendenning notes in the cover feature of RACER’s Speed Issue, it’s not something that’s being actively pursued. The bottom line? If it happens, it happens.

Sure, the frisson of excitement that comes from drivers genuinely tilting at record speeds is part of IndyCar’s DNA, but if the alternative is the caliber of racing we’ve seen at the Indianapolis 500 in recent years, or Texas Motor Speedway’s August re-run, trading in 10mph doesn’t seem such a bad deal.
Contrast that with Formula 1’s plan to make its cars significantly faster next year – as in, four to five seconds a lap faster. It’s an impressive leap in performance and yet, as Mark Hughes puts it in his analysis of the 2017 technical changes, isn’t it answering the wrong question? Aren’t quicker lap times just smoke and mirrors, while the real question remains largely unanswered: how does F1 improve the racing and move beyond the tire-conserving, strategy-thons that it’s currently defined by?
But don’t get us wrong, we love speed and the untrammeled pursuit of it, which is why Bloodhound SSC and its target of 1,000mph – on the ground – resonates so much. Same goes for Danny Thompson’s single minded pursuit of the wheel-driven land speed record his father, Mickey, came tantalizingly close to almost 50 years ago.
So just how important is speed? Ask Danny. For him, it’s everything.

RACER: The Technology Issue

Prior to Audi announcing its withdrawal from the World Endurance Championship and the race it practically owned for two incredible decades, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, one story we were working on for RACER's Technology Issue was potential future tech in the WEC's innovation-friendly, yet mind-warpingly expensive LMP1 class.
Thanks to the continuing fallout from Volkswagen Audi Group's "dieselgate" emissions scandal, that's been replaced with a look-back on how Audi changed the face of sports car racing. But the original story did contain interesting insight on the WEC's willingness to embrace technologies to keep its participating manufacturers engaged, with hydrogen fuel cells the next imminent addition to the rule book.
Writer Marshall Pruett asked the LMP1 manufacturers what new tech they might consider down the line and, pre-pullout rumblings, got a memorable response from Audi Team Joest managing director Ralf Juttner: "We're working on a flux capacitor," he grinned. "And we'll refuel using waste from the year 2050. Any more questions?"
He was joking of course (everyone knows DeLorean-owning "Doc" Brown holds the patent for flux capacitors, not Audi), yet it does illustrate the double-edged sword that LMP1 – and Formula 1, too – represents for its competing marques.
On one side, both series present an opportunity to hone and accelerate relevant, cutting-edge technology in the ultimate development environment. On the other, such freedom and opportunity inevitably leads to a spending arms race that, equally inevitably, leads to casualties.
But the conundrum for any series touting technology is, how do you give auto makers a platform without opening a budgetary Pandora's box? All-electric Formula E believes it has the answer and, so far, the manufacturers are buying into its vision – Audi among them. But as FE opens up its technical rules, the challenge will be keeping a lid on escalating spends.
