Vintage Motorsport Contributor in National Sprint Car HoF Class of 2020

EmailKnoxville, IA — Among the eight inductees for the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame Class of 2020 is L. Spencer Riggs, a longtime and award-winning contributor to Vintage Motorsport.
L. Spencer Riggs’ book “Langhorne! No Man’s Land” documents the storied history of Langhorne Speedway.Growing up in Indianapolis, Riggs was influenced at a young age by the greats of the sport. In addition to writing for Vintage Motorsport, his work has appeared in National Speed Sport News, Open Wheel, Circle Track, the Indianapolis Star and countless other periodicals over the years. He also co-wrote “Indy 500 Chronicles” and authored “Langhorne! No Man’s Land.”

Others who will be inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame at a May 30 ceremony:

1. Eligibility: This RACER sweepstakes (“Leen Customs Motul Pfaff Porsche GT3 Pins”) is open only to those who sign up at the online sweepstakes page, are 18 years of age as of the date of entry and to legal residents of the U.S., void where prohibited to all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations. Employees of Motul (the “sponsor”), Pfaff Motorsports, Leen Customs and their respective affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising and promotion agencies, suppliers and their immediate family members and/or those living in the same household of each are not eligible to participate in this sweepstakes.

2. Agreement to Rules: By participating, you agree to be fully, unconditionally bound by these rules and you represent and warrant that you meet the eligibility requirements set forth herein. In addition, you agree to accept the decisions of Racer Media & Marketing, as final and binding as it relates to the content. The sweepstakes is subject to all applicable federal, state and local laws.

3. Sweepstakes Period: Entries will be accepted online starting on April 24, 2020 at 12:00PM PT and ending May 8, 2020 at 12:00PM PT. Any entries received beyond this period will not be eligible to win.

4. How to Enter: The sweepstakes must be entered by submitting a one-time entry using the online form provided by the sweepstakes site. The entrant must fulfill all sweepstakes requirements, as specified, to be eligible to win a prize:

(i) submission of requested contact information

(ii) agreement to the rules outlined here

Entries that are not complete or do not adhere to the rules or specifications may be disqualified at the sole discretion of Racer Media & Marketing. You may enter only once and you must fill in the information requested. 5. Prizes: Six (6) winners will each receive a “Leen Customs Motul Pfaff Porsche GT3 limited edition pin”, a $150.00 value item each. Actual/appraised value and total items given away may differ at time of prize award. The specifics of the prize shall be solely determined by the sponsor. No cash or other prize substitution permitted except at sponsor’s discretion. The prize is nontransferable. Any and all prize related expenses, including without limitation any and all federal, state, and/or local taxes shall be the sole responsibility of the winners. No substitution of prize or transfer/assignment of prize to others or request for the cash equivalent by the winners are permitted. Acceptance of prize constitutes permission for Racer Media & Marketing to use winners’ name, likeness, and entry for purposes of advertising and trade without further compensation, unless prohibited by law.

7. Winner selection and notification: Eligible winner entries will be selected in a random drawing by Racer Media & Marketing to win a prize. Racer Media & Marketing shall have no liability for a winner’s failure to receive notices due to winner’s spam, junk e-mail or other security settings or from winner’s provision of incorrect or otherwise non-functioning contact information. If a selected winner cannot be contacted, is ineligible, or fails to claim the prize within three (3) days from the time award notification was sent, or fails to timely return a completed and executed declaration and releases as required, prize may be forfeited and/or an alternate winner selected.

• RACER Magazine: The Return to Racing Issue

When we first started plotting the May/June 2020 issue of RACER, we were just beginning to wrap our heads around what COVID-19 and its aftermath would mean for motorsports – still are in many ways. We figured the magazine you’re holding in your hand, or reading online, would be a small sign that we’re still alive and kicking, despite the sport that defines us being in a state of suspended animation.

But, of course, motorsports did what motorsports always does, and with the tenacity, courage and bold thinking that defines every racer, it confronted this new challenge, saw a way forward, and mashed the throttle, not the brake. That’s why this issue of RACER isn’t about a world stopping, but a world restarting. “Drivers, restart your engines…”

As I write this, NASCAR is already leading from the front on how to bring the sporting world back to live physical events, and other race series will soon follow. Safety, of course, must be a defining factor as we move forward, but sport is about risk and reward, too – and nobody understands that better than the auto racing community.

Motorsports is a culture adept in dealing with environments and circumstances that represent mortal risk to competitors, event workers and fans. It constantly manages that risk by relying on science and data with an objective and proactive mindset. Beyond being a defining force in just the return of sports, those are unique attributes that can help lead society forward by demonstrating how to confront and overcome the challenges present in the era of COVID-19.

Whatever challenges still lie ahead for us all, the outcome starts with the mindset we choose. And while some believe racing is in the entertainment business, at RACER we believe it’s always been in the inspiration business, too.

As we built this issue, we were inspired by the teams, sanctioning bodies and tracks we spoke with, not just in the traits we’d expect from racers, but in their selflessness and their desire to be part of the bigger fight against the challenges that confront us all. Auto racing is an industry built for speed and adaptability, and as you’ll read in this issue, so many teams, manufacturers and individuals stepped up and focused those attributes for the greater good.

And speaking of being inspired, preparing the Heroes section for this 28th anniversary issue of RACER has been a true privilege. In its pages we pay tribute to the great Stirling Moss, who passed away April 12, by recalling just some of his incredible exploits. Plus, we go back 40 years to 1980 and the enthralling story of the first of Dale Earnhardt’s seven NASCAR Cup Series championships. Switching to two wheels, we talk with Eddie Lawson about his decade of 500cc Motorcycle World Championship success.
