Elfyn Evans will return to the World Rally Championship's top class for the first time in a year at the Rallye Monte-Carlo. The Welshman will drive a third M-Sport Ford Fiesta in the season-opening event, which starts on Jan. 19.
Evans was part of M-Sport's manufacturer squad in 2014 and 2015, but was dropped to the WRC 2 category last year and claimed three class wins in a Fiesta R5. This year, Evans's car will use DMACK tires, while his teammates Sebastien Ogier and Ott Tanak will use Michelins.
Defending champion Ogier tops the Monte entries in his number one Fiesta, with Tanak and new co-driver Martin Jarveoja carrying number two and Evans three.
Hyundai's trio of Hayden Paddon, Thierry Neuville and Dani Sordo are seeded fourth, fifth and sixth respectively in their i20 Coupe WRCs.
Citroen Total Abu Dhabi drivers Kris Meeke and Stephane Lefebvre have numbers seven and eight on their new C3 WRCs. After an appearance at November's Rally du Var, co-driver Gabin Moreau will be back alongside Lefebvre for the first time in the WRC since he was injured five months ago at ADAC Rallye Deutschland.
Craig Breen will drive a 2016-spec DS 3 WRC on the Monte but is expected to take the team's second manufacturer-registered C3 in Sweden.
The Yaris WRCs of Toyota Gazoo Racing drivers Jari-Matti Latvala and Juho Hanninen are seeded 10th and 11th.
Jordan Serderidis is the sole entrant in the new WRC Trophy for pre-2017 World Rally Cars. The Greek will drive a Citroen DS 3 WRC, having stepped-up from the R5-spec car he campaigned in 2016.
There are 12 entries in WRC 2, headed by former VW team member Andreas Mikkelsen who will make a one-off appearance in a Skoda Fabia R5.
Frenchman Eric Camilli is another 2016 manufacturer driver to find himself in WRC 2. After one season in the M-Sport World Rally Team's main squad, he returns to the category he contested in 2015.
Six drivers are registered in WRC 3 and four in the FIA's RGT-class, including a trio of Abarth 124 cars for François Delecour, Fabio Andolfi and Gabriele Noberasco.
Other notable entries include Kevin Abbring (Hyundai i20) Pontus Tidemand (Skoda Fabia) and last year's Junior WRC champion Simone Tempestini (Citroen DS 3). All will drive R5-spec cars in the RC2 category but are not registered to score points in WRC 2.

[h=2]DAKAR: Loeb takes lead with stage 2 win[/h] Tuesday, 03 January 2017

Rally legend Sebastien Loeb took the overall lead of the Dakar Rally by setting the pace on Tuesday's second stage of the event through the "Chaco" region of Argentina. Leading from from start to finish with his Peugeot 3008DKR, Loeb led opening stage winner Nasser Al-Attiyah (Toyota) home by 1m23s at the end of the 171-mile run, but the Frenchman was cautious not to put too much stock in his form just yet.


“Sure, I like to be in this position but it's a bit early in the rally," said Loeb. "But, it's good to have a pace like that. Today was a stage that was really, really fast; a bit unusual. I hope tomorrow will be continue to be at the same rhythm for the fight. I think we did a good stage with no mistakes – that was the most important thing. It's OK for tomorrow. Daniel [Elena, co-driver] has learned a lot during this year and we'll have to do good work with the navigation, but I think he is able to do so."
Carlos Sainz (Peugeot) and Giniel de Villiers (Toyota) took third and fourth to remain in challenging positions, but the defending Dakar winner Stephane Peterhansel again struggled, dropping some seven minutes.
Although this year marks the ninth time the Dakar has been run in Argentina, the 2017 route is the first to cut through the Chaco region. Competitors had to negotiate some narrow tracks which kicked up plenty of dust in a setting reminiscent of the African savannah, while the regular presence of livestock along the route also made things interesting.
"There were a lot of cows. A couple of them caught me a bit by surprise," noted Australia's Toby Price, winner of today's stage in the motorcycle class, in which he now enjoys an overall advantage of more than three minutes. "You're going along roads that aren't more than a car width's wide and if a cow steps out from behind one of the trees or the bushes, it's not going to be too pretty – but you've already got enough to do than think about that when you're on the bike in the middle of the stage. We have more kangaroos back home than cows, but I'd rather pick on a kangaroo a little bit more than a cow!"
In the quad category, Pablo Copetti fought a stage-long duel with Nelson Sanabria and triumphed over the Paraguayan at the end of the special. The Argentinean is the new category leader in his native territory.

 

[h=2]WRC: Regulation changes for 2017[/h] FIA / Image by LAT

Throughout the course of 2016, the World Motor Sport Council approved a number of changes to the Sporting Regulations for the 2017 FIA World Rally Championship. Here are the main amendments:
Only drivers entered by registered manufacturers are eligible to drive 2017 World Rally Cars, with the approval of the FIA.
A manufacturer may nominate a minimum of two and maximum of three cars for the purpose of scoring points in the Manufacturers' Championship. Scores from the two best cars in the final classification will amass points in this Championship. Additional cars may be entered by a manufacturer but will not be eligible to score points in the Manufacturers' Championship.
To provide the opportunity for more drivers to be nominated, a manufacturer will not be required to nominate the first driver in its team. Nominations will however still be required by the closing date of entries for each event.
In the interest of fairness, the start order for World Championship rallies has been amended and is now based purely on performance:
Day 1: All cars start according to the actual Championship classification
Day 2: P1 drivers start in the reverse order of the actual rally classification after day 1. Other drivers start in the order of the rally classification
Day 3: P1 drivers start in the reverse order of the actual rally classification after day 2. Other drivers start in the order of the rally classification.
P1 drivers re-starting in Rally 2 will start at the end of the P1 group.
The number of additional points available in the Power Stage has been amended to reward the top five fastest drivers and co-drivers. Points will be awarded on a scale of 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
Manufacturers are no longer required to nominate one tire supplier for the season. As such, a different brand of tires could be used event by event or on different cars within one team.
An FIA WRC Trophy has been created for drivers and co-drivers participating in pre-2017 specification World Rally Cars. The maximum number of qualifying rallies is seven and the driver and co-driver who have scored the highest total of points in six of the qualifying rallies will win the titles. If less than five competitors register, no titles will be awarded.
In order to be classified in the final classification at the end of the season, WRC 2 competitors must have taken part in the mandatory rallies in Portugal (19-21 May), Germany (18-20 August) and Great Britain (27-29 October). Except in force majeure, non-participation in any of these three events will result in exclusion from the respective support championship classification and points will not be redistributed.
M-Sport is the supplier of Fiesta R2 cars to the FIA Junior WRC Championship for 2017 and 2018. The six events in the 2017 calendar are the rallies in France, Italy, Poland, Finland, Germany and Spain.
Priority 1 status will be reserved for drivers of World Rally Cars either entered by a registered manufacturer or entered in the FIA WRC Trophy. Priority 2 will continue to be for drivers eligible to score points in the FIA WRC 2 Championship and Priority 3 for those in the WRC 3 and Junior WRC Championship categories.
There is no longer an obligation for organizers to have 25 percent of the route competitive. The total distance of special stages does however remain at between 300-500 kilometers.
In 2017, each rally organizer must attain the middle level of Environmental Accreditation - Progress Towards Excellence - before the end of the season. From 2018, the top level of accreditation - Achievement of Excellence - must be achieved at least four months before the event is scheduled to run.
In order to allow media activities, the reconnaissance must be finished before 17:00 hours on the Wednesday. Between 17:00-20:00 hours is reserved for FIA and team media activities.
The number of permitted chassis per manufacturer has been increased from six to nine and the number of test days from 42 to 55.
Should a rally not be able to run in its entirety, Championship points will be awarded based on the established classification. Full points will be awarded if more than 75 percent of the scheduled length of special stages has been run, half points if between 50 percent and 75 percent, and no points will be awarded if less than 50 percent is run. Points awarded for the Power Stage, if run, are not subject to this attribution of reduced points.

 

DAKAR: Peterhansel edges Loeb, keeps overall lead

Following Saturday's canceled stage and Sunday's rest day, the riders and drivers were back in action on a modified 100-mile special stage.
Due to the persistent bad weather, a new course – primarily on sandy terrain – was designed from Bolivian capital La Paz to Uyuni with the competitors having to repair their vehicles alone for the first time.
One week ago 318 vehicles started the race; only 110 bikes, 25 quads, 72 cars and 48 trucks remain.
In the car category, 12-time winner Stephane Peterhansel edged fellow Frenchman Sebastien Loeb for his second stage win of the race. The French Team Peugeot duo pushed each other all the way with Peterhansel prevailing by just 48 seconds, ensuring he keeps a slender advantage from his compatriot at the top of the overall leaderboard.

"It was small stage, but it was very interesting," Peterhansel said. "There was a lot of navigation and it wasn't easy. It was a little bit easier for me, because there were two cars in front of me and some tracks to follow, but we were doing good with the navigation already. There were some small dunes. They weren't really complicated, but with the altitude we don't have a lot of power. The overall classification is still very close, but it's a really interesting race for everybody, I think. We're still in the fight and that's the most important thing."
Loeb agreed that the short stage was "quite complicated."

"At the end, there was a lot of mud, with big water splashes in faster sections, so we had to be a bit careful, but it was OK and there is no problem with the car," Loeb explained. "I think we drove quite a good stage and we will see how it is for the others. It went well and it seems that compared to Roma we are in front, but he's just finishing now so maybe he's in front of us. It was ok, but there's a long way to go".
Giniel de Villiers in the Toyota Hilux placed third, and Nani Roma took advantage of a poor day from Cyril Despres to finish fourth.

In bikes, American Honda rider Ricky Brabec clinched Stage 7 from teammate Paulo Goncalves, overcoming an 18-second deficit to Goncalves after 56 miles to end up winning with a gap of 1minute, 44 seconds. He is the sixth different stage winner in this year's category.
KTM Factory Team rider Sam Sunderland still sits atop the standings after placing third, but he had a scare 24 miles in after stopping in the sand dunes, more than 300 yards away from the correct route before recovering and limiting his losses.

"It was a lot harder a stage than we were expecting – there was a lot of navigation," Sunderland said. "All in all, it was OK. I lost some time today because it was a sandy stage and the guys from the back can see the tracks cleanly. We'll just keep ticking along. The bike's working well, the boys did a good job yesterday. I'm really happy with everything on the bike. It's the first stage of the marathon day and the tyres are good so we'll just keep ticking along. So far, so good."

Sergey Karyakin won his first quad stage in 2017 to take command of the general classification on his Yamaha. The Russian has been consistent all race but finally picked up the elusive stage win over Axel Dutrie. Ignacio Casale had another solid day to finish third and keep himself in the mix.

In the trucks category, Russian Dmitry Sotnikov picked up his second stage win, having kept his Kamaz truck in the top 10 in each stage since the start. He finished with a 2m51s lead over the Iveco driven by Ton Van Genugten. Sotnikov climbed to second place in the general standings, which are still led by Gerard de Rooy, who maintain his advantage of just over two minutes.

EXR Racing Series - High-Performance, High-Level Racing for Amateur Racers

Exotics Racing began in 2009 as a supercar experience where, for as little as $199, anyone could drive one of the world's most desirable sports cars flat-out around a race track. In 2016, the same group developed EXR Racing Series, aiming to deliver competitive, contemporary arrive and drive racing at an affordable cost. A race weekend including practice, a double hit of qualifying and two races costs $7,990.
Central to the contemporary theme is the car. Dubbed the EXR LV02, it evolved from the Mitjet 2L that's successfully raced across Europe since 2006. The tube-frame chassis machine is powered by a 2-liter, 16-valve, four-cylinder Renault engine delivering 230hp at 7,500rpm, which is on par with the power-to-weight ratio of a Chevy Camaro ZL1.
Outfitted with modern data collection and compliant with FIA safety standards, the LV02 is a car that delivers all the right sensations in a package that challenges drivers of all experience levels.
"We heard from many people that there are many very good race series for amateur racers, but that none of them felt 'real' or looked the part," says Exotics Racing co-founder, David Perisset.
EXR Racing Series is trying to address a challenge for today's hobbyist racer. Unlike other sports where weekend warriors can use the identical or near-identical equipment used by the pros, auto racers can't even come close to driving top-level machinery. But in terms of visuals, technology and the experience, the EXR LV02 looks and drives the part of a modern racecar.
The EXR Racing School, available at the Exotics Racing facilities at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., offers an Introduction to Racing course for $1990, and an SCCA Pro License course for $3900. Both are taught by a group of active race drivers led by Verizon IndyCar Series driver Tristan Vautier and former factory Audi driver and Australian Supercar racer Alexandre Premat.
Successful completion of the SCCA Pro License program qualifies novice drivers to enter the EXR Race Series alongside experienced drivers. The inaugural 2016 season featured an abundance of close racing among drivers of all levels.
The weekend's double-race format offers plenty of track time at marquee venues, including Circuit of The Americas, Sonoma Raceway and Laguna Seca. For 2017, the series will expand eastward, visiting Florida's Sebring International Raceway, in addition to returning to the aforementioned tracks. Plus, the series puts on a three-hour, two-driver endurance race at its home track in Las Vegas that starts in sunshine and finishes under the lights.
Several rounds saw professional drivers, including Arie Luyendyk Jr. and Paul Morris, line up in the same field alongside total beginners, providing not only a great thrill, but also a real performance benchmark.
"Our concept is to offer something that both new and experienced racers can enjoy," says Romain Thievin, Exotics Racing's co-founder and driver. "We saw examples all through the year, where Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze class drivers were able to compete not just against one another, but also against drivers of other categories, while having a lot of fun."
The last word goes to V8 Supercar driver and team owner, Paul Morris, who notes, "It's probably the most fun I've had in a racecar in the last 10 years."

Come to The FIRM for our FIRST RallyX of the year!

ONLY $125

RallyX at The FIRM is a new off road racing series that will consist of timed race laps on a 80/20 off-road to tarmac race course. The drivers have to navigate through a challenging course to compete for the quickest lap times which means fast driving and plenty of sideways sliding. The lap times are added up at the end of the day for a total time and those times are what decide the results. The course will use dirt roads and sections of our professional road course to add up to around 2.3 mile race circuit. Each lap is usually around 3 minutes which gives the drivers plenty of time to push their skills to the test.

On-line registration ends at 11PM the night before the event after which you will have to register at the event.

RallyX Schedule:
7:30am gates open*
8:00am – 8:30 vehicle tech
8:30 mandatory drivers meeting
9:00 – 11:55am track open.
noon until 1:00pm track closed for lunch
1:00 pm – 4:00 track open
5:00pm gates closed
