Sebastien Ogier held station on the fourth and final day of Rallye Monte-Carlo to claim victory in his first rally since changing to the M-Sport team with co-driver Julien Ingrassia.
The four-time FIA World Rally Champion and local hero managed the tricky conditions through the final day, with unpredictable weather forcing difficult decisions on tire choice. The Frenchman was cautious throughout the day's three stages and took his fourth consecutive Monte win, fifth in total, and the first for an M-Sport built WRC car since Rally Great Britain in over four years.
Behind him, the drama of the first event of the FIA World Rally Championship's new era continued.
Ogier's teammate Ott Tanak, who began the day in second place, suffered problems on the first stage, reporting that he was down to just two cylinders by the end of SS14. He was late into SS15 by six minutes, before losing over a minute on stage too. After his time penalty, the Estonian had dropped to third behind the Toyota of Jari-Matti Latvala by 34.8 seconds.
There was ultimately only one stage remaining after SS15, as the penultimate stage was canceled for safety reasons due to too many spectators. Tanak had recovered some power by the start of the Power Stage and drove spectacularly in the ever-worsening snowfall and icy roads. He finished with a massive slide out of the final corner of the rally to hold off a fast-finishing Dani Sordo in the lead Hyundai i20 Coupe, who picked up his first stage win of the event.
Jari-Matti Latvala delivered Toyota a podium on the manufacturer's return to the WRC from a 17-year hiatus. He inherited second after Tanak's earlier woes, and managed the Yaris WRC on the treacherous roads to hold the position to the end.
It was a successful rally for all of the former Volkswagen drivers, with Andreas Mikkelsen taking the WRC 2 category win for Skoda by three minutes – and finishing an impressive seventh outright. The FIA WRC 3 Championship was won by Raphael Astier in his Peugeot 208.
In the Power Stage, the early runners made the most of their much better conditions before the snow started falling heavily. Long-time rally leader Thierry Neuville took the stage win by an impressive 30 seconds and collects five points towards the Drivers' Championship, some consolation after such a fine run from the outset. With points available for the top five crews this year, Stephane Lefebvre in the new Citroen C3 WRC picked up points ahead of Juho Hanninen, Eflyn Evans and Dani Sordo.
The second round of the FIA World Rally Championship takes the contenders to the only true winter event of the season, Rally Sweden on Feb. 9-12.

Dreyer & Reinbold Racing, the defending Red Bull Rallycross Lites champions, announced today that young driving stars Alex Keyes, Christian Brooks and Travis PeCoy have signed with the team to compete in the 12-race 2017 Red Bull Global Rallycross Lites division beginning at the series opener scheduled for April 28-29 in Memphis, Tenn.
Keyes, Brooks and PeCoy return to the highly-competitive GRC Lites division with the reigning Lites series winners in Dreyer & Reinbold Racing, the Indiana-based operation which captured five Red Bull Global Rallycross Lites Series main events, 23 heat races and seven fast qualifying honors in 2016. Keyes, racing a limited schedule in 2016, scored two main event wins, seven heat race victories and five fast qualifying times for DRR.
"I am extremely thrilled to announce the three-driver lineup with Alex, Christian and Travis joining our Dreyer and Reinbold Racing Lites team in 2017," said Dennis Reinbold, team owner of the DRR organization. "All three of the drivers have shown tremendous potential in the Lites cars already and we feel this 'Triple Threat' offers us another great chance to repeat as Series champions. We're very excited to have Buddy Rice back as our Lites director, Jeff Britton returning as our chief engineer and to maintain the continuity of our high-quality core group of personnel, which we believe positions us very well for another run at a championship in 2017. I couldn't be more excited for the 2017 season."
Rice, the 2004 Indianapolis 500 champion, will continue to serve as DRR's Lites director in 2017 where he will oversee the DRR Lites program and focus on driver development. Britton also has been a race-winning engineer in the Verizon IndyCar Series for the past 20 years.
"We believe that our three young Lites drivers are very talented and Alex, Christian and Travis have a great opportunity to battle for the Lites championship in 2017," said Rice, also a Rolex 24 winner at Daytona. "Alex is already a race winner in the Lites division and Christian and Travis have been winners in other racing divisions and showed potential in their rookie seasons in GRC Lites last year. With some early testing, I think we can develop all three Lites cars into winning machines for the three drivers."
Keyes, 19, enters his third GRC Lites season in 2017 but his third-year as a GRC Lites competitor, as the Folsom, Calif., racer has been a regular on the victory podium in 2015 and 2016. Keyes, coming from open-wheel racing including winning a Formula Pro Mazda title, has recorded five career Lites feature wins as well as taking numerous Lites heat races and No. 1 qualifying spots. Alex will drive the No. 24 car for DRR in 2017.
"I'm excited to be back in the Red Bull GRC Lites in 2017, but I'm stoked to be back with Dreyer & Reinbold Racing," said Keyes, who scored features at Atlantic City and Los Angeles last year. "Over the past few years, I have gotten to know this team, not only have we been successful but they have become a family to me. I think we have a recipe for success. Everyone from Dennis, Buddy, our mechanics and our partners are all motivated to win this year. I'm looking forward to working with Travis and Christian too. DRR always has a great atmosphere so I look for us to elevate each other."
Brooks, 16, comes to Dreyer & Reinbold Racing after his rookie season in GRC Lites in 2016 with a stellar racing career in karting. The Santa Clarita, Calif., driver spent ten years in various karting divisions and took championships in the 2011 US Rotax Grand Nationals and the 2012 and 2016 Rotax Challenge of the Americas.
Last year, Christian recorded three top-five finishes in main events and placed fifth in the final Lites point standings. Brooks, a "fan favorite" throughout the 12-event Red Bull GRC Lites series, will pilot the No. 44 machine for DRR in 2017.
"Driving for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing is truly an honor," said Brooks. "To be among the historic list of drivers to compete for the team will be something that pushes me to the limit and to achieve the best results possible. With one GRC Lites season under my belt and a championship team behind me, I am entering the year with high confidence and I'm excited about the 2017 season!"
PeCoy, 16, also debuted in the Red Bull GRC Lites category in 2016 with a second place in the Atlantic City feature and a heat race win. The Yorba Linda, Calif., high schooler comes from an off-road background where his father, Bobby, is a multi-time winner. Travis scored five off-road championships early in his racing career as well as taking a world title. Last season was PeCoy's first experience racing on pavement but he quickly showed his potential despite a limited schedule. Travis will compete for the DRR squad in the No. 3 Lites car.
"I'm very excited to join a championship-winning team this year with Dreyer & Reinbold Racing," said PeCoy. "I think we can work together in hopes of gaining a 1-2-3 in the championship. I want to be in contention for the title. GRC is a chance to show who I am and what I have to offer through driving and self-preservation. I'm a normal kid – I go to school dances and I play video games, surf, ride mountain bikes and snowboard. But I'm ready for the potential of having a great race team in 2017."
Dreyer & Reinbold Racing will utilize the spec GRC Lites machines from Olsbergs, the all-wheel drive vehicles with six-speed sequential transmissions and 310-horsepower engines.
DRR will announce a full roster of commercial partners for the Red Bull GRC Lites team in the near future.
The Red Bull Global Rallycross Lites division will be televised nationally with each event being produced on the NBC Sports Network.

NBC and NBCSN will combine to produce more than 20 telecasts of the Red Bull GRC Supercar and GRC Lites series, and all events will be live streamed on NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app – NBC Sports Group's live streaming platforms for desktops, mobile devices, tablets, and connected TVs.

Jari-Matti Latvala is the early leader of Rally Sweden, edging Thierry Neuville in the opening Karlstad test. Latvala's Toyota Yaris was 0.9s quicker than Rally Monte-Carlo winner Ogier in their head-to-head duel around the 1.90km special stage at the town's trotting track.
Latvala (pictured), who finished second in Monte-Carlo, was 0.6s ahead of Thierry Neuville's Hyundai i20 Coupe, who in turn was 0.2s faster in his heat against Ott Tänak. Dani Sordor beat Craig Breen to take the third spot, with Tanak four and Ogier fifth. Mads Ostberg, quickest in the morning Shakedown in his 2017-spec Fiesta debut, defeated Kris Meeke's Citroën C3 for sixth.
"Now I just need to hold the horses. I'll just try to get a good rhythm tomorrow, that's the important thing," Latvala said, according to WRC.com. "I used my shakedown tires, which are not so nice but good enough to do the stage," he said. "It wasn't a perfect stage, but good enough. I wasn't so happy with the balance. It's quite tricky out there, I planned to do better than that."

The 2017 Red Bull Global Rallycross season will kick off with a brand-new event at Memphis International Raceway. Taking place on Friday, April 28 and Saturday, April 29, the new event will represent the first of 12 rounds on this year's championship schedule.
"We're looking forward to bringing wheel-to-wheel Red Bull GRC action back to Tennessee with our new partners at Memphis International Raceway," said Red Bull GRC CEO Colin Dyne. "Memphis is a perfect host city for our 2017 kickoff round, as our teams get back to action after an exciting offseason and start the chase for our next title."
Located only 15 minutes from downtown, Memphis International Raceway's 3/4-mile oval will be transformed into a dynamic Red Bull GRC course with the addition of dirt and the series' signature 70-foot jump. From the starting grid, located just outside of Turn 3, drivers will charge down the front-stretch into the banked Turns 1 and 2 before taking on the dirt and jump in the infield. The field will then race down pit road in the opposite direction, dip into the infield, and rejoin the tri-oval in Turn 4 before accelerating to the finish line.
Red Bull Global Rallycross Memphis will represent the first outing for numerous driver and team pairings in both the Supercar and GRC Lites classes, including Patrik Sandell's first race with Subaru Rally Team USA. In last year's Supercar opening round, Tanner Foust cruised from the pole to the main event win with a perfect round, while Miki Weckstrom won last year's Lites kickoff in only his first career start in the series.
"Memphis International Raceway is thrilled to have this opportunity to host Red Bull Global Rallycross for the kickoff of their 2017 season," said Pam Kendrick, president of Memphis International Raceway. "The opportunity to bring a new and different racing experience for the Memphis and surrounding markets is always a plus.
