sc300 is an Inline 6 (2jz-ge) The block is exactly the same as the 2jz-gte with different internals. The head on the other hand is very different.
I just bought a '92 and the body and interior is in really good shape, but all of the suspension and almost all of the bushings are shot. It would be most beneficial to buy a newer SC, but if you plan on immediately replacing the lower control arms and suspension for performance (upper/lower control arms, power steering, carrier bearing on the driveshaft, transmission mounts, motor mounts and so on) than an old SC3/SC4 might be for you.
Personally, I wish I would have found one with coilovers already installed along with all of the pollyurithane bushings that are costing me more in the long run.
1992 SC300
Cost of the car: $3,150
Cost of parts:
power steering rack bushings- $50
Transmission mount- $60 shipped (I have a friend that works at Lexus)
It despireatly needs:
Lower control arms ($230 each through Toyota)
New shocks and springs (I am going with coilovers= $880-1300)
Driveshaft Carrier bearing ($125 through Toyota)
motor mounts ($75 ea. from Toyota)
I passed up several newer SC300's and a few modded ones too because 5000-7000 was out of my price range. Now that I am reaching that cost, I am regretting not saving my money for a little while longer.
If you get one, make sure to buy your parts from Toyota. They are usually the same exact thing, but half the cost.
Just be very specific and aware when you test drive the car.

^no shit!
what are you wanting the car for, driving or modifying
are you desiring auto or manual, if you want a 3rd pedal then you don't need to think future (without swapping a trans)
the 400s make good power in factory forum, and stupid amounts of tq when blown.
the 300 shits and gets as well and handles slightly better due to less weight up front.
