4age cam gears???
Maybe...it all depends on how different the F heads are from the G heads.

uhh... don't quote me on this but i think the 4afe cams are gear driven. i.e... gears mesh inside the head, so if this is true, which im pretty sure, but not 100%, cam gears arent going to do anything.
oh ok, i was figuring i'd try it. sicne the 4age is a more powerful engine i figure cam gears from it might give the engine a little power thats being stolen away from it when i turn on the ac or something. i can get them for like 10 bucks in very very decent shape. i would ask someone at toyota but all i get is "we at toyota recommend that you do not modify the car from factory specifications"

Cam gears dont have anything to do with the AC.....

yeah i think you have the function of cam gears a little distorted. cam gears are slotted with set screws so you can degree them positively or negatively to advance or retard your cam timing. they wont give you more power, but they will change where in the rpm range your power may kick in. well, i suppose maybe a fraction of power, but thats beside the point. does the timing belt on the 4afe slip over one cam gear or two? cause if the belt is just driving one cam gear then the one cam is being driven off of the other by a gear inside the head. so really you could only put one adjustable cam gear on there and it wouldnt really do anything. you could just dial them in differently and it would perform the same function. and where are you getting these gears for 10bucks???
thx appreciate the info. i am just content with the fact that i learned something new without the typical tr flaming. appreciate the intelligent feedback

nikon, when you take off the timing belt cover does the belt go from the crank pulley to one or two cam pulleys? i am curious myself now. like i said before, even if it is belt driven, if there is only one cam pulley then whichever cam is being belt driven, is driving the other cam via gearing. its a common DOHC setup.

By engine name, 4A-FE goes...
F goes from crank to a single cam gear, which has a set of gears behind it that drive the two cams together.
G goes from crank to two cam gears, which power the cams directly.
And I keep forgetting I have a 1.8L (7A-FE), not a 1.6L (4A-FE), same setup though.
