This is actualy my first post on TR so I figured I would say hello to all you fellow Toyota Owners first.

First off...I agree with jabdrifter. If your having a diffucult time figuring out a simple cooling problem then don't bother with the swap. You will find youself with a motor on the ground and no way to put the new one in. (don't take offence to that, its just that I know how difficult toyota motors are to put back in since I have had to take my 5sfe out 4 times because the balancer was warped when the hole time the machine shop was telling me it was the rod barrings.)

And with this cooling problem...
First: obviously check to see if you loosing coolant. I know it sounds simple but this was the cause of the biggest headache in my life. Since I didn't see any traces of coolent on the driveway I figured it was no big deal. When the engine finaly did overheat it said to me "hey bro this is bull shit and I'm hot. Fuck you" LOL. (yes my car talks to me)

Low and behold the freeze plug on the back of the block was leaking. Now since it was a small leak, the coolent would actualy evraporate off the hot block before even reaching the ground. I have heard this has been a problem with toyotas for some time mainly on the 5sfe motor. Ever since I bought my new Camry I clean the engine bay every 3k miles cause I so parinoid!

I'm not saying this is your problem and altough it sounds like a simple fix.....its not.

This guy needs to take the car to HIMSELF instead of taking it to a shop... if you take it to the same place they will keep dicking you around knowing you will come back to spend more money.

At LEAST try somewhere else first, thats what I tell to all my girl-friends who have a "family mechanic" and their car "always breaks down". Seems to fix the problem rapidly.... "Family mechanics" are not looking out for your best interest in the pocketbook.

no coolant is leaking....its all there..and ive had the car back for dayz....i had already checked the hoses to see if n e thing was dripping but there isnt....at first i was thinking that the antifreeze was jus wasnt circulating properly but i have no way of knowin if it is or not....the motor always ran a lil hott.....but no one could figure out y....and wuts wrong wit a rotory motor? and who sais im gonna be the one workin on it? lol...and blu02camry dude....thanx for the info but i had already checked all that stuff out

if you have all this money to blow at shops for basic repairs, imagine how much you could spend on ricer stuff like table top wings or neons lights. in order for all these dreams of your to come true, all you have to do is open a book and learn about cars

ok well all i did was present the idea of a vtec in my car to my friend in a "jokingly" manor cuz i kno my motor sux....and yes...the 3sgte sounds like a really good motor to use.....and theres a high possibility i mite get it.....and yea id like to open a "book" and learn about cars...but like most i cant learn that way...i have to learn by doing it myself...or else im readin giberish....and it seems none of my friends kno wut to do so i dont have the "greatest" oppurtunity to learn even tho i want to. so yea...dont hate when i dont have certain advantages rite now....and yea i luv the rx8...i will indeed have that car...lol

 

Ha noob you don't get it. Don't take this the wrong way but don't rice out your 5th gen celica gts. It looks pretty clean in that pic. Do you even know what Vtec is? Why would you put a honda motor into a toyota? Honda motors usually tend to lack torque, the Celica is much heavier then your typical civic hatch/coupe. If you want variable valve timing just put in a Beams 3sge hahaha! There is no book that you can pick up that will explain to you how to swap a 3sgte into your celica. Use www.CelicaTech.com as your first resource if your really sincere about doing the work, or you could just pay XAT to put it in for you for 4500$. Just remember to do your research first.

P.S. Don't make a post about droping in a honda motor into any toyota @ Ctech. Just a heads up.

 

Oh yeah I forgot to mention, don't buy an rx8, they extremely suck and are over rated for the money. If you want rotary get an rx7 fc or fd body.

Go buy a Hayes/Chiltons/Toyota BGB. It will help you learn about and understand the car.

My Haynes says you should check the following:

1.Insufficient coollant
2.water pump drivebelt defective or out of adjustment
3.radiator core blocked or grill restricted
4.faulty thermostat
5.coolant fan blades broken or cracked
6.rediator cap not maintaining pressure
7. ignition timing incorrect.

The worst one would be the water pump, just because you'd have to take off the timing belt cover.

So, check everything out thoroughly, and as a last case scenario, check the water pump.

 

man do u all even read n e thing i wrote? i wasnt even the person who posted it...i jus thought of it as an idea...i thought that the vtec would be a lil more dependable then my gts since it gives me so much shit...lol...i had a 91 integra and i never once had a motor problem wit that thing...yes the 3sgte motor is now MY CHOICE...so stop tellin me to put it in...lol...and "bequietanddrive" i will indeed check those things...

4.faulty thermostat<~~when i bought the car the fuckin car didnt even have one...i have a 2.2 liter engine so i went and bought one for a 2.2 liter...well it was too big...so i bought the next smaller one for that motor...which is a 1.6 liter thermostat...it looked like it would fit but i dont kno i gave it to them to install...im tempted to see if they even put it in...they said they did.....
5.coolant fan blades broken or cracked<~~there was a sensor problem and the fan wouldnt turn on b4...it does now...well ive seen it on once..i dont kno exactly when it does tho...lol..i had it idling for ten minutes and the engine was feelin pretty hot and it didnt even turn on
6.rediator cap not maintaining pressure<~~its new but it looks worn out
7. ignition timing incorrect.<~~possibility

but i leave tomorro on my trip to ft pierce across the state...hopefully it gets there...lol...and i dont see wuts wrong wit an rx8....ive read up on it and everything seems to check out...the motor is even placed differently so that the car is perfectly ballanced....six speed sounds nice to me..lol
