Actually the core of what we use is vbulletin, we've just done a bunch of custom mods to it. Upgrading would add new features, not really new performance.
Our DB is quite large, thats part of the problem. we could clean it up but the resulting tears from the change in post counts would make katrina seem like a summer shower.
The 2 servers we run on are reasonable, but a few years old. They arent $500 servers, one of them is a DL380G5, the other is just a custom built 1U. The DB box was pretty expensive. we could probably replace them both with a single box.
that wouldnt solve the problem exactly. the problem is the amount of posts/threads we have and how things are laid out. We'd need to make a few architecture changes, possibly move to 2 DB's etc etc. Going up from here is not cheap.
So right now, search goes off when we have problems.

doesn't tr/tf make any money for upgrades or changes from its advertisment ads that it has at the top of the pages? i am not the best business man but, it seems like your local tv and radio stations continue to operate and provide everyday functions from what it makes from advertising ads and still manages to pay there employee's a shit load of money also. just seems that tr/tf could do the same, if they aren't already.

we bought it.
TR runs on decent hardware.. hence why it's not trivial to upgrade it.
We are considering going back to a single server though, dual quadcore with 8gb ram and some fast disk... with a new box like that hosting JUST TR and TF, we could leave all the other sites on the DL380G5, get rid of the current 1U Web server, and have room to do decent development on the old box. I have to constantly delete stuff to put up a dev site to work on TR.
we suffer from a lack of disk space right now.
