OK, we took both cars to New Jersey Motorsports Park. It was extremely hot, over 100 degrees each day and an index of 115. When we came in from qualifying we look over the car, while the car was sitting there we heard a "pop". The inside right front axle boot blew up like a balloon and exploded. This was caused by the turbo down pipe heat-soaking the boot while we looked over the car. We replaced the axle, and had to keep the car jacked up, and rotate the axle, along with a fan on the car during these "check stops" to prevent it from happening again.
We qualified 3rd and were thrown out by Gran Am. The way the boost measurement works, is that there will be spikes in the boost, you can have high, short term spikes, or low, long term spikes, not to exceed a certain percentage. We were over by .002 percent and they sent us to the rear.
We started about 29th, ran up through 20 cars and were running in roughly 10th when we came in for the 4 tire/driver/ fuel stop. After the stop I informed the crew chief that we had lubricant in the front wheel, originally, we thought it might be from the boot and we were going to live with it until the end of the race, but after looking at the TV we noticed more smoke from the vehicle. The intense heat and the fact that we had reamed the crap out of the car (we were in 3rd place!) in order to get tot he front took it's toll. The engine compartment temp was so hot that it burned through the oil return line(S) and ignited. We came into the pits, extinguished the minor fire and were out.
Once again, a good car, decent qualifying and we got jones'd. The race is on July 30 at 3pm and we had a (SPEED) in car camera this time so there should be some good shots of the car in action on the TV show.
