I've owned this 04 sti for a couple of months now and love it! The rear struts clunk, are they bad or is this normal?

you sure its the struts, there are a couple of itbs for the water cooler moving that can sound like strut knock, and for the subframe/diff shift knock. water tank there is no fix for the shift knock, a set of bushings or whole rear kit will clear that up. May be the struts but usually its not

The water tank is tight. the car has 102,000 miles on it, and they were never replaces. I got the service records from the dealer. All of the bushings look good as far as i can tell

The bushing may be tight but have to much play, its very common, search it you wil see. I've seen a lot of these cars wit much higher mileage than that with original struts 102 isn't that high.

'04 Sti struts are know to clunk. There is a write up on ScoobyMods that explain how to fix this, but it means taking the assemby appart.

If your going to do that, might as well get a new set of struts or some nice coilovers.

I do have a much better spring compressor than the one in the write up. I'll have to confirm it's the struts clunking over bumps and stuff

I've never needed a spring compressor but should make it a lot easier if your by yourself and I read somewhere that the Mobil 1 red grease was recommended
