Default Need some trouble shooting help

So yeah, 6 speed may be coming sooner than I expected

I have this ticking/whirling sound I hear coming through the shifter that is directly related to speed. The faster I go, the louder the noise is. Doesn't matter whether the car is in gear or not and the only time it goes away is when I come to a stop. You can also hear it from the outside when the windows are down.

I'm guessing a chipped tooth on one of my gears, huh?

I thought that at first, but wouldn't wheel bearings hum when they are going out and not make a rattling sound?

At low speeds under 20 just coasting it sounds like tapping/ticking noise. Above that is when it starts making a whirling sound and at 60 it's almost a whine.

I need to get the thing up on jack stands or a lift and have it in gear coasting and listen to where the noise is coming from. I just need to find time to do that.

Also I need to figure out whether to rebuild the 5spd, find a junkyard 05+ LGT 5spd or do a 6spd. Even though I'd like a 6spd, I need to go with the best "bang" for the buck option.

Is there anyway you could put the car up on jackstands and just put it in gear and get under the car to have a listen?

Im planning this weekend on draining the tranny fluid and seeing if I find metal chunks.

I'll also borrow 2 jack stands from my buddy so I can get all 4 wheels off the ground and pin point the sound. Going by a thread I found on NASIOC, it doesn't sound too good for me, but we will see once the weekend comes.

Well I was running Extra-S but I'm pretty sure I will be going back to Redline synthetic which is what I originally ran and didn't see that much difference between the much praised Extra-S.
