I use snowman and love him (and his tuning ). a custom tune will always be superior to an OTS (off the shelf) tune. Definitely pick up a downpipe and get a custom tune. Downpipes really aren't that expensive and there isn't much of a difference between the cheap ones and expensive ones.

Just called Cobb tuning and asked if there were any issues using a AP on a 07 sti. I was told that the only problem they know of was the 07 STi may over boost if using a catless DP. I guess a catted DP is next on my list after the AP, but still going to do a little more research.

i have an 07 sti as well, im assuming thats the shittiest model ever made by subaru when it comes to modifications. i just got a tune and it didnt work correctly. id go with the accessport, especially if your car is still under warrenty.

i would go with 3gsucks opensource because using generic "cobb" maps doesn't take into account the fact each motor is different. I believe that there are very minor attributes that vary with each motor. As well as this minor differences, elevation, season, the types of mods you have done to your car, all take into account. By just placing a "generic" map, how could one map possibily satisfy all of these variables. Opensource tuning with a professional tuner allows you to "tune" specifically for your car and particular set of variables.

For safety, and power gains, opensource tuning is by far superior to generic maps.

if your stage 1 i would definatly save the money spent on a AP2 for an opensource tune.. you can use that extra 5-600 bucks for anything else you want..

instead of buying the APv2 you can get a full exhaust and an opensource tune by snowman, or any other mod you want... unless in the long run your planning on getting seriously modified (BIG TURBO, meth, injectors, etc..) i would definatly just save that money to go somewhere else.

Dont blame subaru for the shotty work you had done. Yes 2007 STI's have had problems with stock "tunes" but that can be fixed with a good tune.

To OP: based off your reactions to things you seem to be how I was originally. So I see you intially getting the AP being moderately happy with it but then want to push it a little more and will either get a protune or some other custom tune (in my case I went opensource). Which is fine, Cobb tunes I believe are safe.

So I say get the AP, flash stage 1, eventually go stage 2 and if you still arent happy or want more then look into more customized tunes. AP's hold their value fairly well so at the end of the day you might only be out a hundred bucks or so if you end up selling it.

Hydra is not for a beginner nor a stock car.

Accessport is a good way to go but i would not get an accessport to go stage 1. Waste of money in my opinion. stage 2 worth it

with that said Accessport was also having some issues with there 07 sti stage 2 maps. at least from this guys review
Looking for advice - Florida Subarus
although this was a while ago so they have probably updated it by now.

dont waste money not a bunch of gauges. when im running my car i can barely pay attention to my boost gauge (you need one of those).

Happy modding

agreed, use the money towards a exhaust and uppipe. Then get the AP or any em and tune. I personally have the AP and love it, especially because you can pull your CEL's. I have also had UTEC and Ecutek. I like AP over all because it has the benefits of a reflash like Ecutek and also has FS, LC, and multiple maps like Utec.
